Shakuntala Devi review: Vidya Balan shines as the human computer

Vidya Balan is back with another amazing performance. Let's find out how the movie is.

MUMBAI: As we all know, due to the pandemic, the theater business has also been affected to a great extent. Bollywood movies are now in the race for a digital premier. After Virgin Bhanupriya, here is another woman-centric movie, Shankuntala Devi. It features Vidya Balan, Sanya Malhotra, Jishu Sengupta, and Amit Sadh, and is directed by Anu Menon.

The story begins in Bangalore. Shakuntala Devi is brilliant at maths and can solve mathematical equations in a few seconds simply by staring at them. Her family comes to know about this, and the little girl becomes the wage earner by doing maths shows at different schools as a child and in different countries as a grown-up.

Later, we see that Shakuntala Devi is married and has a daughter. Her passion for maths interferes with her marital life and affects her relationship with her daughter. Will she able to balance her personal and professional lives? It is very interesting to see the journey of human computer Shakuntala Devi.

The screenplay of the 127-minute movie is decent and manages to hold the attention of the audience almost throughout the movie. You may find that a few portions drag on unnecessarily. The direction of the movie is good, but you have to keep track of when the story is in the past and it is in the present, which should have been done in little better way to avoid confusion.

Talking about the performances, Vidya Balan proves this time too that she is a brilliant actress. She is the soul of the movie. Dangal fame Sanya Malhotra does a good job of playing a daughter who hates her mother. Jishu Sengupta and Amit Sadh are decent in their parts.

The positives of the movie are Vidya Balan and her performance. The actress has carried the entire movie on her shoulders. The strong screenplay keeps you engaged. You will also witness Sanya Malhotra in a never-seen-before avatar. Some unknown facts about the real Shakuntala Devi will make you happy and proud.

The negatives of the movie are the confusing narratives of the past and present stories. A few scenes drag on, but the strong writing comes to your rescue.

Overall, Shakuntala Devi is a complete family entertainer, and you will surely love Vidya Balan.

Team TellyChakkar goes with 3 stars for Shakuntala Devi.
