Significant Bollywood movies never fail to emphasise the importance of self-written mails, Read to know why

From movies like Bareilly Ki Barfi to Maine Pyaar Kiya, let's take a look at few wholesome Bollywood movies, wherein letters and mails played an integral part of the movie's basic and/ or climax plot.

MUMBAI: It's true cinema is powerful and is capable of bringing alive emotions. Sometimes, these emotions can be penned down in the form of words.

In a world where social media brings people closer, letters hold a different power to make those relationships valuable and strong. Talk about old-school love, scribbling words on a piece of paper, or writing tiny notes to your loved ones; all these eventually make your bond even more special and memorable.

Bollywood movies have beautifully incorporated the idea of using letters as a medium of expressing feelings, and have given us memories allowing one to cherish the warmth and personal touch of handwritten letters. As we tend to draw cinematic parallels, we came across these beautiful movies, where letters played a major role to make them memorable.

For all the hopelessly romantic souls out there, if handwritten letters allow your heart to grow fonder, the storyline of Bareilly Ki Barfi is quite endearing to embrace that inside you. In the movie, 'Bitti' (Kriti Sanon) is shown as a progressive and rebellious girl who loves to live her life at the edge. But when it comes to love, she is an old-school romantic girl. She soon starts to write letters to an unknown author of a book, which she happens to read during an attempt of sneaking out. While Chirag (Ayushmann Khurrana- who’s actually the original author) plays cupid between her and the other person, whom she presumes to be the author instead. After a series of events, Chirag reads out the last letter during her wedding, for which she immediately responds by saying "aur kab takk chupaoge Chirag?".

Chirag’s last letter stole the show. The entire movie was endearing to watch. The movie also teaches a very important lesson about patience, when it comes to falling in love.

Communication brings clarity in life and helps shape perspectives. But what happens when one communicates with an unexpected stranger on a daily basis? The Lunchbox is a story of an unconventional friendship kindling through an exchange of notes with the help of a lunchbox. 'Ila' (Nimrat Kaur) is a middle-class housewife, who attempts to add some flavour to her marriage with her cooking skills, in order to gain a loving response from her careless spouse. However, her 'dabba' is received by another office labourer named 'Saajan' (Irrfan Khan), who’s close to his retirement. Soon, the friendship goes ahead when Saajan and Ila start sharing their personal feelings through letters. Their notes become little confessions and acknowledgements about their loneliness, memories, regrets, fears, and even small joys. They individually discover a new sense of self and find an anchor to hold on to in the big city of Mumbai.

In Hum Aapke Hai Kaun?, the dog named Tuffy’s impromptu, incorrect yet timely delivery of the letter to 'bade bhaiyya’, which was written by Nisha (Madhuri Dixit) and was supposedly for Prem (Salman Khan), proved to be a game-changer for the film’s plot. When bade bhaiyya (Mohnish Bahl) reads the letter, he realises that Prem and Nisha love each other. Both of them had vowed to sacrifice their love for each other for the well being of the family. Subsequently, bade bhaiyya halts the wedding, confronts both of them in order to unite the two lovers and furthermore, blesses the couple.

In Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, we have all cried with this little girl while she reads the letter. Had it not been the 8th birthday letter of little Anjali (Sana Sayyed), how else would the universe favour Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) and Anjali (Kajol) to reunite? The letter which was penned down by Tina (Rani Mukerji), had changed their lives forever. Little Anjali made sure to reunite her father with his best friend Anjali. She took a vow to keep her mother’s promise. Right from attending the summer camp in Shimla to tricking Rahul to come as well, Anjali made sure to fulfil her promise. The movie also teaches a very important lesson about keeping promises. Regardless of age if you make a promise, make sure to value those words till the very end.

In the movie Mujhse Dosti Karoge?, we had witnessed the exchange of electronic letters (aka emails) as the medium of communication. The story revolves around three childhood friends; Pooja (Rani Mukerji), Raj (Hritik Roshan) and Tina (Kareena Kapoor). While Raj has always been more attracted to and smitten by Tina, he was completely clueless of Pooja’s love for him. When Raj moved to England with his family, Pooja wrote emails to him that were signed under Tina’s name, hoping that he would revert back to her. While exchanging e-mails, they realize they have many things in common, which had brought them closer to each other. Raj soon realises that it was Pooja who wrote him the emails, after a series of events which made him realise that Tina never wrote those emails.

Do you remember humming the lyrics of “Kabutar Jaa..Jaa..Jaa" from the same song of the movie Maine Pyaar Kiya? We still do. In the movie, when Prem (Salman Khan) leaves for his business trip, he drops a letter for Suman (Bhagyashree), to which Suman responds and sends him back a letter with the help of a pigeon. The exchange of letters played an integral part of the movie for keeping their young love alive. Pigeons used to be the primary messengers in ancient times and this was a beautiful way to pay homage to the age-old tradition.
