Gunjan Saxena Row: Big Trouble mounts for Karan Johar as Delhi High Court sends summons to Dharma Production; Deets Inside

Delhi High Court has issued summons to filmmaker-producer Karan Johar's production house, Dharma Productions after ISRA filed suit against them. ISRA alleged that performances were commercially exploited in Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl

MUMBAI: 2020 has surely not been a good year for Karan Johar as his production house has repeatedly been part of legal trouble. Ever since Karan Johar released his much-awaited film Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, its courting controversy and landing in legal troubles every now and then. After IAF slammed makers for showing Air Force in a bad light, Indian Singers Rights Association (ISRA) filed a suit against filmmaker-producer Karan Johar's production house, Dharma Productions. In their complaint, ISRA has alleged that performances were commercially exploited in Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl and they seek royalty.

According to a report in Bar And Bench, Delhi High Court has issued summons to Dharma Production on the suit filed by ISRA. The Singers Association alleged that the film has commercially utilised three performances - Ae Ji O Ji from the film Ram Lakhan, Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai from the film Khalnayak and Saajan ji Ghar Aaye from the film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. However, the defendant has refused the claims on the ground that the performances weren't "live" and "do not qualify for the payment of royalty."

Not only that, the report further stated that the defendant said that the license for the songs was taken from the concerning labels. Next hearing of the matter is scheduled for March 12, ’21.

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl was led by Janhvi Kapoor and it also stars Pankaj Tripathi and Angad Bedi in lead roles. The film that revolved around the story of first female Indian Air Force pilot in combat named Gunjan Saxena.

Earlier, Janhvi Kapoor had opened up about receiving criticism for Gunjan Saxena. Kapoor told Film Companion, “My sister is supremely cool and strong, so she is like, 'Just don't give a sh*t, it is fine.' But you have to exercise more sensitivity because there is a bigger thing at play and bigger emotions at play that everyone is dealing with. I don’t want to ever come from a place where I am like, 'Oh, sympathise with me, I am being trolled' because everyone does have their journey.”
