MUMBAI: The television set has always been a focal point for families in the Indian context. There was a time when watching a TV show used to be a huge affair – the entire family would get together, people would ensure they reach home on time, and dinner time used to be scheduled around their favourite TV shows.
What it all meant was, watching television together was family time! It was a time for all the members of the family to laugh, cry and be happy together. My name is Aanjjan Srivastav, but the television viewing audience and my fans know me as "Aanjjan Wagle Srivastav" and listening to fans addressing me by this name reminds me of the small role I got to play in bringing happiness into the lives of so many Indian families.
I sometimes wonder what’s the secret behind Wagle Ki Duniya's success and why it has struck the right chord with the audience. In my opinion, Wagle Ki Duniya is a unique combination of a well-written story and solid strong characters which allowed the audience to form a bond with the show. It is a show that helps people to see their own stories being reflected in the quirks of the characters on screen, making it a delightful journey for them.
True happiness means different to different people, while it could be spending quality time with family and friends or seeing them happy or simply spending time alone doing something you love. Real happiness is not materialistic, it is simply about enjoying all the little things in life. You may be stressed about closing a multi-million dollar deal at work but one hug from your daughter or one caressing hand over your head by your mother instantly relaxes you and makes you smile.
Such is also the effect of good content on television.
Since Wagle Ki Duniya first went on-air, the television shows and the genres might have changed drastically, but one thing has remained constant – our quest for light-hearted, de-stressing content. We yearn for rich content that enables us to switch off from our day-to-day grind and monotony. Be it the beautiful Malgudi Days or Office Office, such shows have etched a special place in our hearts because of the way every character and story was scripted to perfection. Such characters are as simple and as common as you and me, and yet they continue to dominate our nostalgia filling it with fond memories.
I feel there could not have been a better year than 2021 to bring back one of RK Laxman's most exceptional work, Wagle Ki Duniya - a show that is so deep-rooted in our culture yet one that attempts and breaks stereotypes.
With all that has happened in the last year, I urge you to treasure your happiness flame and continue fuelling it, it is what will keep you above negativity and will make you a better human being.
As we celebrate International Day of Happiness this week, let's not forget the role of television shows that are bringing alive strong relatable characters and their stories which spread happiness in our lives. Traditionally considered as the 'Idiot Box', the television today through some highly enriching content focusing on a wholesome entertainment package is helping bring families together which is eventually leading to happier homes. Let's entertain as well as promise to be entertained this year.
