Pt. Ravi Shankar was among India's best known contemporary musicians and had the honour of playing with international stars such as The Beatles. He received three Grammy awards and will be competing posthumously against daughter Anoushka Shankar, also a sitar player, for another Grammy in 2013.
Panditji received the Bharat Ratna in 1999. He was a Rajya Sabha member from 1986 to 1992.
The sitar exponent was the younger brother of dancer Uday Shankar. He composed music for Satyajit Ray's famous Apu trilogy. He also wrote Western concert music for the sitar and orchestra, and performed with violinist Yehudi Menuhin.
