Amrita Singh, who made her film debut in Betaab opposite Sunny Deol in 1983, will play the on-screen mother of Arjun Kapoor in Karan Johar's cross-culture love story <em>2 States</em>. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Chetan Bhagat.
The film is a story about two people from different states falling in love and the ensuing cultural clashes between them and their families.
The film will see Arjun essay the role of a Punjabi boy, while Alia Bhatt will play a Tamilian girl.

The shooting of 2 States is yet to begin and the makers may start this from February or March.
2 States, directed by Abhishek Verman is being co-produced by Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala.
Earlier, in Sanjay Gupta's crime drama Shootout at Lokhandwala, the 54-year-old Amrita Singh played mother to gangster Maya Dolas (Vivek Oberoi) while in Apoorva Lakhia's Dus Kahaniyaan, she played mother to Minissha Lamba.
