MUMBAI: Sonali Kulkarni has starred in many Bollywood films, but moviegoers still remember her for her role in Dil Chahta Hai. The film has completed 21 years of its release this year, and it is still loved by one and all. Even the songs of Dil Chahta Hai are remembered by everyone.
TellyChakkar recently interacted with Sonali Kulkarni and spoke to her about 21 years of Dil Chahta Hai, upcoming projects, and more…
Dil Chahta Hai was released 21 years ago, but you are still remembered for your role in it. How does that feel?
Yes, we celebrated 21 years of Dil Chahta Hai, and believe me it feels like 4-5 years. Whenever I meet Aamir, Saif, Farhan, Ritesh, or Zoya, it doesn’t feel like so much time has passed. I am grateful that they have given me the landmark of my career. I have done some fantastic roles in my career, but Dil Chahta Hai cannot be replaced. People still remember Woh Ladki Hai Kahan and many times I am welcomed by the tune of the song. I recently celebrated my birthday, and many people sent me reels that have a tune of Dil Chahta Hai which is amazing. It feels so proud to be a part of a milestone in Indian cinema.
In Hindi films, we haven’t seen you much as a protagonist or the lead heroine roles, and watching you as Salman Khan’s mother in Bharat was a shock for everyone. How did that happen? Did you become choosy or you were not getting good offers?
It all goes hand-in-hand. We have people in the industry who guide you. My era was such when secretaries mattered, there were no agencies, and my family doesn’t belong to the film industry. I hail from Pune and my family was academically oriented. For me, I had no background and I had no guidance. There was no godfather for me. I didn’t have anyone to go to and say launch me. I have no complaints about the industry, but maybe my choices in between went wrong. I had signed about 8 films which went nowhere. I had two choices rather go deep down in depression or face the next day with confidence and faith that I know I am a good actor, and work will come my way. I have done some roles which any actress would kill to be in my shoes. Even if people remember me for Dil Chahta Hai and cut to Bharat, I am okay with it.
Tell us something about your upcoming projects…
There are 3 Hindi films, 2 Marathi films, there are 5 web shows that I am currently connected with, and there are 2 guest appearances. What I am looking forward to is Apoorva Lakhia’s Crackdown season 2 which will be ready to release very soon!
