MUMBAI: The mantra of Japanese skincare truly advocates putting the good stuff on your skin and into your body. Afterall, what you eat is also what you become. The Japanese skincare routine is much simpler and low key as compared to its Korean counterpart. While it may not be as popular as its Korean skincare routine, the J-beauty routine has a holistic approach. It deeply focuses on giving nourishment and hydration to the skin, UV protection, and sun protection which neutralises the sun’s damage on the epidermal layer.

Here is a carefully curated J-beauty skincare routine especially for you. This includes a DIY guide for both the AM and PM routine. We’ve got a perk for you as well! We let you in on all the details on how this regimen helps the skin. It can do wonders when paired with a nutritious Japanese diet and will give you that oh-so-glowy skin.

The AM routine

1. Cleansing

Cleansing is a cardinal skincare ritual for the Japanese that they follow with the utmost care. So pick a gentle cleanser and rinse your face well. Lastly, pat dry.

2. Toning

Toning is a pivotal next step post cleansing as it helps with tightening pores and restoring the pH levels.

3. Essence

The essence is a water-based product and contains a high amount of active ingredients. It helps hydrate the skin and should be applied right after toning.

4. Serum

Get your hands on a serum as per your skin concern and slap it on after applying an essence. It’ll help with targeted skin concerns.

5. Moisturiser

The moisturiser in the Japanese skincare routine forms a barrier on the skin. You can use a light moisturiser of your choice.

6. Eye Cream

We need eye creams to protect and nourish the area around your eyes. So go ahead and dab a little bit of the product around the eyes with your fingers.

7. Sunscreen

Japanese women take protecting themselves from sun damage very seriously. So you better do that too, pile on some much needed SPF.

The PM routine

1. Double Cleansing

The Japanese go for a double cleansing during the PM routine using cleansing oils followed by a gentle cleanser to get rid of all the muck.

2. Exfoliation

The J-beauty routine includes exfoliation once a week in the PM routine. It should be done right after cleansing as it removes dead skin cells.

3. Toner

Never skip toning your skin using a gentle alcohol-free toner during the PM routine.

4. Skin Softening Lotion

Slap on some skin softening lotion enriched with goodies such as ceramides or sake in the PM.

5. Essence

Just like the AM, repeat the application of the essence step after using the skin-softening lotion for hydration.

6. Serum

For the PM routine, definitely top your skin up with a serum to help with any target skin issues you might have.

7. Spot Treatment

If you’re somebody who has acne prone skin, you better use a spot treatment to dry up the lesions.

8. Eye Cream

Eye cream is an ever so integral step in the Japanese PM skincare routine. So nourish the sensitive skin around your eyes right.

9. Moisturiser

Here’s the final step of the PM skincare routine - the moisturiser as it helps to lock in that essential moisture and keep the skin hydrated all night long.
