After Gadar 2, Bhool Bhaulaiyaa 2 Drishyam 2 and more, is nostalgia the only way to bring the audience back to theatres?

The audience fell in love with OTT platforms and it took a long time for the audience to shift from OTT back to theatres but we did not get to see a lot of mega blockbusters like Pathaan, Jawan, Gadar 2 and Animal. Seeing how remakes and sequels have become a trend, is playing with the nostalgia the only way to attract attention of audience?
Bhool Bhaulaiyaa 2

MUMBAI : During the pandemic when the theatres were inaccessible, OTT opened its arms wide for the audience showing them a wide variety of stories, characters and actors that they had not seen before in movies. This really made the audience’s perspective to entertainment wider and they started demanding something unique.

Surely we got past the dark times of Pandemic and the theatres opened up but the audience then entered the theatres with a different mindset. A large part of the audience had shifted to OTT platform and it became difficult for movies (which were releasing on big screens) to survive. It took some time but soon the shift from OTT to theatre started and we saw the audience going crazy over movies like Gadar 2, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Jawan and Pathaan.

All the while, we saw the makers trying different stories and formulae but nothing seemed to work. However, what seemed to grab the attention of the audience was coming up with remakes and sequels. What happened with those movies is different case. However, it seems that now there has been a dry spell on both OTT and theatres as well because we don’t get to see a lot of releases on OTT and on the other hand, movies that are being released on big screens are not touching the success line as well as they were expected to. Surely there were many reasons to it.

Recently, there were reports that Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan are going to get together for a comedy film again. We all know the wonders that the actor-director duo has made earlier with movies like Hera Pheri, Garam Masala, De Dana Dan, Bhagam Bhag and many more. Akshay Kumar is known for action and is even loved for his comedy. It’s been a long time since we have seen him playing a comedy role but it seems that the actor will soon come back to comedy.

We also got to watch Ajay Devgn coming with Drishyam 2 earlier which worked really well. Even director Anees Bazmee is busy shooting for Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 where we will get to watch Kartik Aaryan and Triptii Dimri as a fresh pair but that’s not it as Vidya Balan will also be seen again. This has made all the Bhool Bhulaiyaa 1 fans excited.

The point to note here is that the audience gets attracted to something that gives them the nostalgic feeling but the question remains – is playing with this nostalgia the only key to the success of a movie?
