MUMBAI: Ace filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali's OTT hit debut web show 'Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar' showcased the life of courtesans and in today's fan fiction, we will reveal why it is a perfect ode to cinematic classic 'Mughal-E-Azam' that had Madhubala, Dilip Kumar in pivotal roles. If you have seen 'Heeramandi' you will realise that it looks very similar to ''Mughal-E-Azam'. In the film and Bhansali's web show, women were seen leading, getting their hearts broken and mustering the courage to move ahead in life.
"Heeramandi’ has nuances which you feel are found in the great Kamal Amrohi’s ‘Pakeezah’. ‘Heeramandi’ is my tribute to the great ‘Mughal-e-Azam’, ‘Pakeezah’ and Mehboob Khan sahab’s ‘Mother India’,” Bhansali had even said in an interview with Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos.
We also feel Bhansali may have been inspired by stellar directors of Hindi cinema notably Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra, Mehboob Khan, Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt due to whom stories related to women are getting more love, respect and recognition. Even in Madhubala's 'Mughal-E-Azam', one fan feels, "They told beautiful women stories. They understood that she is the creator of man, therefore she needs to be given a place in literature, cinema and art. They always told stories of women, they were not necessarily telling stories of men".
Talking about Heeramandi, the main cast included Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sharmin Segal and Sanjeeda Sheikh. In both 'Heeramandi' and 'Mughal-E-Azam' the characters were not perfect, they could never be perfect as they had a lot of sorrow within them.
K. Asif's epic period drama film, 'Mughal-E-Azam' showed how Prince Salim (Dilip Kumar), the romantic hero falls for a courtesan (Madhubala). He is astonished by her beauty that he does not care when his dad Akbar does not approve of Salim's idea of marrying Madhubala.
