It’s not just about productivity but also the entourage effect: Karan Gulianii on entourage culture

Karan Gulianii

MUMBAI: In a recent interview, Anurag Kashyap opened up about the entourage culture that exists in the industry, and said that actors come with their own team of 7-8 people, and they are allowed to do it because he or she is the actor of the film. He further said that the entourage makes it a crowd; they are quite demanding, and it increases the cost too. Writer, actor, and director Karan Gulianii, who has directed movies like Sarvann, and Amritsar Chandigarh Amritsar, has supported the filmmaker and said that it impacts not only the cost but productivity too.

He said, “I agree with Anurag Kashyap's opinion. I think it's not just about productivity but also the entourage effect. When an artist has a large entourage, it reduces the number of shots we can take, resulting in wasted time. This ultimately impacts the film's budget, and the producer has to bear the cost.”

Karan believes that every story is unique, and filmmakers strive to present different perspectives, but the budget can make or break a film.

“I believe that the fees charged by some stars are excessively high. In Hollywood, there is a culture of minimum guarantees and percentages, which should be adopted in Bollywood as well. If a producer earns well, the film will be successful. But if the producer incurs losses, the film suffers,” he said.

He further stressed that it's wrong for artists to demand excessive fees for their entourages and personal expenses like gym equipment, which the producer ends up paying for. “Artists should be pampered to an extent to perform well, but the responsibility for the film’s success lies with the director. If the movie flops or fails or is not able to recover its money, the producer loses their money and the director loses their credibility. Ultimately, everything boils down to the director’s vision and management, but nobody considers what goes on while making the film,” Karan ended.
