MUMBAI: Shahid, Rajkummar Rao's critically acclaimed film, was made on a ₹65 lakh budget and is considered one of his best efforts to date. Rajkummar portrayed the title character in Hansal Mehta's film, which was about the 2010 assassination of human rights activist and lawyer Shahid Azmi.

Hansal Mehta’s son Jai recently spoke about his film Shahid going through many challenges during its release and making. He said, “We shot a 32-day shoot for a period of a year and a half, and the fact that the entire crew stayed and we pulled off a movie in ₹65 lakh. It’s a very good feat!”
Shahid failed to find takers in India even after being screened at several film festivals, such as the Toronto Film Festival and the Busan International Film Festival. Not even its glowing reviews could help it.
Jai added, “Then the Mumbai film festival (MAMI) happened after quite some time of Toronto, and there, producers Siddharth Roy Kapur and Ronnie Screwvala watched the film, and that's when the audience really accepted it.”
Jai has previously assisted in films like Gangs of Wasseypur, CityLights, That Girl In Yellow Boots. He then directed his series, Lootere.
Recently, Rajkummar Rao starred in Srikanth, the biographical film directed by Tushar Hiranandani. Rajkummar and Triptii Dimri are set to star in Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, which is now in production.
Also making a comeback as Vicky in Stree 2, the follow-up to Stree (2018), is the actor.
