MUMBAI : The Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal is now enjoying the success of his latest film Bad Newz. He began his career in the film industry working as Anurag Kashyap's assistant director on the legendary Gangs of Wasseypur.

During a recent conversation, Vicky disclosed that he nearly got attacked by a mob while he was gathering images of illegal sand mining for the movie. He also related another incident in which he nearly was caught in Benaras for shooting at the train station there.

In an interview with comedian Tanmay Bhat on his YouTube channel, Vicky talked about how, while filming Gangs of Wasseypur, he nearly was beaten up by the sand mafia.

He said, “The coal smuggling that was shown in the film was real. We shot it. One incident happened when we went to capture visuals of illegal sand mining. I was baffled because that was the first time I realised that this happens so openly that you wouldn’t feel that this is actual smuggling going on; you would feel that it is a properly run business because there weren’t just two trucks standing there, there were 500 trucks.”

He added, “We were shooting them secretly and some people came. There were 500 people surrounding us. So, the camera attendant was an old man, some 50 plus. That guy called the unit saying that the camera wouldn’t come on time because we were caught up in a situation here. Hearing him talk over the phone, the person there thought that he was calling somebody influential. That man slapped the cameraman, snatched the camera from him, and threatened us that they would break the camera. We both were about to get beaten up, but we somehow escaped.”

Anurag had disclosed in numerous earlier interviews that Gangs of Wasseypur was filmed in real-world settings using secret cameras, a method that occasionally put the crew of the movie in danger.

Vicky recalled the same, “We had a camera in a van and we were shooting at the Banaras station. The shot was that Nawazuddin Siddiqui would come out of the station, sit in a cycle rickshaw and leave. Though we were shooting with a hidden camera, but we still demanded a proper single shot. While we were shooting that scene, we saw two constables looking into the camera and pointing at it, asking, ‘Who are you?’ At that point, I just told the guy to drive the van and run from the station because the police had seen us. This was how Gangs of Wasseypur was made.”

When it was first released, the two-part epic black comedy crime film won a lot of praise from critics and did well at the box office. Over time, the films also developed a sizable cult following.
