MUMBAI: Sonam Kapoor sees her Mumbai house as a personal homage to both her own developing journey and India's rich heritage. The Saawariya actor recently shared photos of her lavish Mumbai home, which is a gorgeous blend of traditional elegance and modern flair.

Sonam is well-known for having exquisite taste and personally created the interior décor of the house she shares with her husband Anand Ahuja and their kid Vayu. Sonam disclosed in a candid interview with Architectural Digest that her house is an assembly of memories and finds from her many trips throughout India.

“This house marks a new chapter for me, as a woman, a collector — and a mother,” she expressed, adding, “I had been longing for a base in which to curate all the things I have collected while filming in far-flung parts of India over the years.” Her husband, Anand, encouraged her to build a base closer to family, which played a crucial role in realising this objective.

Sonam Kapoor was intrigued by the apartment's spacious layout and high ceilings, which first made it an attractive investment property. She saw herself turning this blank canvas into an amazing spectacle. The outcome is a warm and endearing maximalist masterpiece.

Shared some stunning pictures, in a joint post with the magazine, she wrote, “Having spent much of the lockdown era in a stucco building in Notting Hill it was a deep-breath moment to decide to spend more time in the city of my birth,” explaining her decision to design the house.

“If I love something, nothing will stop me from getting it home. It was Anand who pushed for it — he argues that with a baby looming, we should be closer to the family. I had bought this modern, and slightly soulless, apartment as an investment. But, as I spent more time in it, the double-height ceilings and the sweep of the lateral space began to seduce me. I quietly relished the idea of creating a spectacle from sheer nothingness,” she narrated.

Sonam Kapoor offered fans a glimpse into her living and bedroom havens on Instagram. She described her living room as the heart of her home, where friends gather and memories are made. Overwhelmed by the modern architecture, she sought to infuse the space with nostalgia, resulting in a layered, hand-painted sanctuary.

“Welcome to my living room where I do all the entertaining things like hanging out and where all my friends come. This is one of my favourite rooms where I ever lived, because all my fantasies come to life. The reason I went so Indian and maximalist, I just wanted a lot of layers because this is a very new building. I just got really overwhelmed by coming to this very modern building. I was like, ‘How do I make it nostalgic to who I am,’ and I just went mad. Every wall over here is hand-painted.”

Sonam undoubtedly inherited her creative flair. The spark was lit by her maternal grandmother, or "nani." “She was a tiny woman but so full of vim. She was obsessed with fragrance, music, art, and carpets. Growing up in a post-Partition Sindhi family, she possessed an innate refinement in her tastes. It is hard to understate her influence on me. Her influence on me is immeasurable.”

Next, the renowned interior designer Kavita Singh, Sonam's aunt, took over the baton. Together, they have tied her home's walls into a tapestry that combines traditional and contemporary.

Sonam gives appreciation to Vikas Soni, a fresco artist based in Jaipur for bringing her vision to life. She added a majestic jharokha as the center point of her own bedroom, hiding the television for a continuous look, after seeing Cher's bedroom feature in Architectural Digest.
