MUMBAI: Uma Basu is no stranger to captivating audiences with her performances, but her latest role in Suman Indori promises to take things to another level. The show, produced by the talented Prateek Sharma and Parth Shah under Studio LSD, has already been making waves, and Uma's portrayal of Purna is at the heart of this buzz. In an exclusive interview, Uma dives into what makes this character so special, her experience working with a visionary team, and why challenging herself as an actor is something she thrives on.
When asked about her role in Suman Indori, Uma couldn’t help but express her excitement. "I'm playing Purna in the show. She's a very strong grey character" Uma begins. "Purna is someone with darker intentions and complicated motives. It’s something what drew me to her."
The role of Purna allows Uma to explore different facets of the character’s personality, something she relishes as an artist. "There’s so much to uncover about her. One moment, she’ll have the audience in splits, and the next, they’ll be questioning her every move. It’s those unpredictable layers that make Purna such a fun challenge to play," she adds.
Working with producers Prateek Sharma and Parth Shah, and the creative powerhouse that is Studio LSD, has been a career highlight for Uma. "It’s been an absolute joy working with them," she shares. "Prateek and Parth have such a clear vision for their stories, but they also give actors the freedom to explore their characters deeply. They trust us to bring our own touch to the roles, which is so empowering."
Uma’s character, Purna, is one that could easily fall into one-note territory, but the team behind Suman Indori ensures that doesn’t happen. "My character has so many layers to it, and you’ll get to see them all as the show progresses."
For Uma, acting has always been about growth, both personally and professionally. She strongly believes in the importance of stepping outside her comfort zone to truly embody a character. "For an actor, stepping outside their comfort zone isn't just important—it’s essential," she says passionately.
"Our job is to bring characters to life, which means pushing ourselves into unfamiliar territory. Sometimes that means trying out new accents or learning new skills, but often, it’s about confronting emotions or situations that might be uncomfortable. But that discomfort leads to growth, and that’s where you find the magic as an actor. It’s how you connect with a character on a deeper level."
While the on-screen drama is captivating, the moments behind the scenes of Suman Indori are just as lively. Uma shares, "Oh, we have a blast on set! The team is full of wonderful people, and we’ve had our fair share of funny moments," she laughs.
The strength of Suman Indori lies in its authenticity. The show reflects real-life experiences, something Uma believes will resonate with viewers on a deep level. "The story is adopted from society," she explains. "It’s about the lives of everyday people, their struggles, their hopes, and their relationships. I think that’s what makes it so powerful. People will see parts of their own lives in these characters and their stories." According to Uma, this relatability is what will draw viewers in and keep them hooked.
