MUMBAI: Dhruv Tara – Samay Sadi Se Pare actor Gulfam Khan Hussain, who is currently seen in Gehna: Zevar Ya Zanjeer, believes that luck is more important than looks in the entertainment industry. However, she emphasizes that the standards of appearance are primarily set for female actresses.
She said, “I read somewhere that it's 90% luck and the rest is talent, and I believe that too. As far as I can see, luck plays a bigger role than anything else. For ages, our male heroes haven't necessarily been the best-looking. Meanwhile, the heroine or even the female cast is expected to look prettier and younger. It’s unfair, but that’s the reality.”
“Even today, we play mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and elder sisters to men who are often older than us. So, looks are more important for the female cast,” she added.
Gulfam also acknowledges that although the number of platforms and channels has grown, increasing competition significantly, favoritism continues to play a major role in the industry.
She said, “Favoritism is an integral part of this industry. People often get work through recommendations. Even though the number of platforms has increased, there’s always a recommendation or a lobby at play. Most others end up getting only small roles unless, of course, lady luck is on their side.”
Has she had personal experience with this? “It has happened to me more than once, but you just shrug it off and move on. Life is a circle—what goes around comes around. Another opportunity will come, and another day when lady luck is on your side,” Gulfam concluded.
