Presents a balanced perspective—it doesn’t glorify or vilify anyone: Pawan Chopra on Freedom at Midnight

MUMBAI: Pawan Chopra, who is seen as Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in Sony Liv's new historical drama series Freedom at Midnight, feels that the series is a must-watch for the younger generation. He feels that it will truly and wholly make them understand the story of India’s independence.

“For many of us, our knowledge of the freedom struggle came from films like Gandhi, but there hasn’t been a well-made series on this subject in recent times. This is unfortunate because today’s youth might not be aware of the immense sacrifices made for our independence,” he said.

“This series presents a balanced perspective—it doesn’t glorify or vilify anyone but tells the story as it happened,” he said, adding that it portrays the pain of partition and the efforts made to avoid it, which ultimately failed.".

Pawan mentioned that the series highlights the contributions of leaders like Gandhi, Nehru, Patel, and Maulana Azad, ensuring they aren’t forgotten.

“Maulana Azad’s story, in particular, is often overlooked. He was a staunch opponent of partition and worked tirelessly to keep India united. Being a Muslim, his vision was remarkable—he believed that partition would weaken the region. Despite his efforts, he couldn’t prevent it, and the series captures that struggle beautifully,” he said.

“This is more than just history; it’s a reminder of what independence cost and how unity should always be prioritized. I hope this series helps the younger generation appreciate the legacy of these leaders and understand their invaluable contributions to the India we live in today,” Pawan ended.
