MUMBAI: Bhumi Pednekar’s journey into the world of films is anything but typical. From a young age, she decided she wasn’t going to follow the conventional path. "When I was younger, I got bullied in school because I didn’t look the way the popular girls in school looked," she said at a recent event. "That’s when I had decided that I may not be the conventional ‘pretty’ that people have set the standards for, but I will break those boundaries."
This sense of determination has stayed with her throughout her life. Bhumi didn’t have a clear way into the film industry, being a complete outsider. She began behind the scenes, working in Yash Raj Films for six years. “I didn’t know how to get into the world of films,” she admitted.
“It was destiny that I got my first job in a casting department. That wasn’t part of my plan. It was my destiny,” Bhumi recalled. Once she had her foot in the door, she set a clear goal. “I decided that I will conduct every audition so well that directors will start asking me to become an actor, and I’ll say, ‘No, no, sir, not me.’ I was hoping that they would convince me so much that I would eventually say yes. And thats exactly what happened.”
Her plan worked, but not without immense effort. “I was a casting assistant, and I did my work with so much dedication that I decided that I will become irreplaceable. I have held on to this motto till today, that I’ll work with such honesty because that’s all I have.”
Bhumi’s career is a result of determination, both as a professional and as someone who’s constantly redefining what success and beauty look like. It’s clear she hasn’t just broken boundaries—she’s created her own space, entirely on her terms.
