It’s very rare to come across a character like Girgit in TV shows: Sumit Kaul on Tenali Rama

MUMBAI: Actor Sumit Kaul, known for his roles in shows like Tanaav, Nazar, Laagi Tujhse Lagan, Siya Ke Ram, Bahu Hamari Rajni Kant, and Janani - AI Ki Kahani, to name a few, has joined the second season of the popular historical comedy-drama Tenali Rama. He will be seen portraying the role of Girgit and is thrilled about the opportunity. He said, “Usually, in TV, it’s not easy to find well-rounded, quality characters for male actors. It’s very rare to come across a character like Girgit in TV shows. Most actors would jump at the chance to play this part. It was a very easy decision for me. I’m thankful to my producer, Roopali Singh, for considering me worthy of this role.”

When asked about his character's contribution to the show, he revealed that it would add more intrigue to the story. “Without divulging too much about the storyline, the makers are trying to introduce additional flavors to the show by bringing in new characters, including Girgit,” he shared. “Girgit comes with a very deep personal grudge and acts with the sole purpose of destroying Tenali and the Krishna Devarai kingdom. His presence introduces a new dynamic to the show and serves as a significant, looming threat to the protagonist,” he added. As the name suggests, Sumit will be seen donning multiple looks for his role as Girgit. He explained, “These range from extremely dramatic and larger-than-life appearances to that of a pauper. His superpower is his ability to remain unrecognizable, which is an exciting space for me as an actor.”  Playing Girgit came with its challenges, as the character is a master of disguise. “Girgit, as a villain, is not your regular, physically dominant antagonist. His strength lies in his sharp intellect, which he uses to create hurdles for Tenali, while constantly changing his personality to keep his opponents guessing,” Sumit said. “Being a master of disguise makes Girgit a very challenging character to portray. As an actor, it’s important for me to depict the multiple personalities of the character without making it obvious to the audience that it’s the same person. This requires playing with not just physical appearances but also mannerisms, voice, and attitude,” he concluded.
