Connect movie review: Nayanthara starrer has a great concept, but Ashwin Saravanan fails to create a perfect horror film

After its Tamil and Telugu versions, now Nayanthara starrer Connect is all set to release in Hindi in theatres on 30th December 2022. The trailer of the film grabbed everyone’s attention, but is the movie worth your time and money? Read on to know that...

MUMBAI: Hindi dubbed versions of South films have done well at the box office this year. But, not all South films have been able to get Hindi moviegoers to the theatres. Now, Nayanthara starrer Connect is all set to release in theatres in Hindi. Down South, the film has received a lukewarm response. So, is the Hindi version worth a watch? Read our Connect review here to know that...

Connect is about a family of four; Susan (Nayanthara), Anna (Haniya Nafis), Joseph (Vinay Rai), and Arthur (Sathyaraj). Joseph is a doctor and while treating patients during the earlier days of the pandemic, he gets Covid-19 and passes away. His wife Susan and daughter Anna are in shock to hear this news. A few weeks later, Anna performs a seance on a zoom call with someone and things don't go as planned, and she gets possessed. How a mother fights with the demon to save her daughter, forms the rest of the story...

The basic concept of Connect is damn good and something new for Indian audiences. Just imagine, you are in the middle of a national lockdown and one of your family members gets possessed by a demon! The thought of it will send shivers down your spine.

But, unfortunately, Ashwin Saravanan's narration is just good in bits and parts. There are a few jump scares but it's not thrilling or scary throughout. Also, the pace of the film in the first 30 minutes is very slow.

Ashwin has tried to make a film where he mainly wants to play with the minds of the audiences through voices and the atmosphere that he has created. While in some scenes he succeeds, in some it just falls flat.

Performance-wise, Nayanthara, Sathyaraj, and Haniya Nafis; all three have given their best, especially Haniya. Also, now we surely want to watch Nayanthara in her Hindi debut Jawan. Anupam Kher in his extended cameo is good.

In a horror film, the background score plays a very important part. In Connect, the background music is good, but nothing new, we have heard the same pattern of sounds and music in horror films earlier.

Overall, Connect has a fantastic concept, but Ashwin Saravanan's narration could have been better. If you don't have anything to do this New Year weekend, maybe you can watch Connect once in the theatre. But, don't expect it to be a wow scary film.
