MUMBAI: Samantha Ruth Prabhu starrer Shaakuntalam is one of the biggest South films that have hit the big screens this year. The movie was release yesterday and while it’s a Telugu film, the movie has been dubbed and released in Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam.
Directed by Gunasekhar, Shaakuntalam is a movie made on a grand scale, and the audience nowadays is looking forward to watching such movies on the big screens. While not in any other languages, it was expected that the movie would have a good opening in Telugu at the least, since Samantha is a big name in Tollywood.
However, that has not happened as the film has taken a very dull start at the box office. Shaakuntalam has collected Rs. 3 crore at the box office in all languages. In Telugu, the film has collected Rs. 2.43 crore, In Hindi, the collection was Rs. 40 lakh, in Tamil it collected Rs. 15 lakh, and in Malayalam it just collected Rs. 2 lakh.
Well, the first day collection of Shaakuntalam is equal to Samantha’s last release Yashoda. But, Yashoda was made on a much less budget than the Gunasekhar directorial.
The reviews of Shaakuntalam are also mostly negative, so one cannot expect it to show a big jump over the weekend. But, let’s wait and watch.
When it comes to Bollywood films, there were no new releases this week. Talking about last week’s release Gumraah, the film in its week 1 collected Rs. 5.85 crore. It’s a disaster at the box office.
