MUMBAI: Veteran producer VA Durai, who played a key role in financing some of Tamil cinema's historic works, passed away on Monday night at a private hospital in Chennai due to complications from his preexisting diabetes.
The 69-year-old producer passed away due to his illness after experiencing a substantial drop in his parameters. The producer recently recovered from a successful procedure that required the hospital's director Muthuraman to amputate one of his legs. Eventually, the procedure had a negative impact on both his physical and mental health.
In his final days, the Tamil cinema industry had been very sympathetic to the difficulty of the producer. Superstars Rajinikanth, Suriya, Vikram, and Raghava Lawrence are among the members who stepped forward to offer to pay for his medical bills. In fact, the producer's friend posted a video on social media pleading for help. At that point, Rajinikanth had called Durai and promised to help him in any way after the filming and release of Jailer.
Durai and Rajini have a tight relationship because the latter financed Baba, the former's biggest success. Suriya also reportedly gave his Pithamagan producer Rs 2 lakhs in support.
The producer was receiving critical care at home, but complications following the mentioned procedure developed and necessitated rapid hospital care. On Monday night, his condition eventually got worse, and at 9 o'clock he passed away.
Durai leaves behind a lasting contribution to Tamil film, having provided his support to works like Baba, Pithamagan, Lovely, and Gajendra. The producer left behind three daughters and two wives.
