He has written for a couple of shows mostly for Hats Off Productions namely Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka, Shubh Mangal Savadhan, Baa Bahoo aur Baby among others. Yes, we are talking about Rajesh Soni, well-known scriptwriter and theatre artiste. Tellychakkar.com corners Soni for a freewheeling chat for ‘Behind the Lens’ section. How did begin your journey in the industry? Let me begin this way. I could have become an actor or a writer. I was doing theater when Aatish Kapadia approached me and asked if I could write as well. Then I gave a writing test and cleared it. So thus began my writing journey. I thought that writing has better career prospect than acting. Finally, I took up writing and stuck with it. How did scriptwriting come to you? (smiles) As I told you, I met Aatish Kapadia, and he decided to judge my writing skills after which he took me under his wings. Most of the time, I have worked with him and J D Majethia; they are like Godfather to me. Can you name us a few serials that you scripted for? I have written for many serials big and small. Let me start with the popular ones namely Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka, Baa Bahoo aur Baby and Shubh Mangal Savadhan. Currently, I am scripting for Byaah Hamari Bahu Ka and Ek Dusre Se Karte Hain Pyar Hum. In between, I was also associated with Saas Bin Sasural. As far as films are concerned, I have been associated with Samir Karnik’s Kyun Hogaya Na. Why did you quit Saas Bina Sasural? I didn’t quit. It’s just that my work was over. How do you manage to script for two completely contrasting shows? Well… I love my profession so much that it comes to me as a natural instinct; I never have to struggle much. My tuning with Aatish matches a lot; I don’t have to explain him much. He understands it very well and there’s never a crisscross. Can you tell us something about your work profile? Well, after writing scripts, I hand over the same to the producers. Then it is the call of the channel and the producers to take things forward. What challenges you have experienced till date? Not gravely. Though initially, I had some monetary issues, but now things are much better off. Have you ever changed your script for the sake of TRPs? No, not yet. As I said, we know what the mindset of the viewer is. I never changed the scripts. Since the TRPs of Byaah Hamari are very low, I am working on the script. But, right now, I will not be able to reveal how the plot will unfold in the future. All the time you work single-handedly. Don’t you feel like taking someone to assist you? Though I have been getting many offers, I haven’t felt like heading or supervising other writers. Since I have that potential in me, I can write all by myself. Yes, I encourage many writers to write and live their ambition. Do you watch serials? Honestly, I never watch serials. I don’t even watch my own serials. What are your future plans? I am very happy and content with my life. I thank God for the amazing profession I am in. Yes, I have still one ambition left; would love to write for films more.
