A writer should be a great observer and I possess that talent: Amit Aaryan

When dialogue and script writer Amit Aaryan started his career in 1995 as an assistant director (AD), little did he know that his talent lay in penning down words. He has been scripting for FIR (Edit II Productions) since its inception. In an interview with Tellychakkar.com, Amit talks about his journey and also relates his experiences being a scriptwriter for our Behind the Lens section. Excerpts: How did you evolve as a writer? Well, I started my career as an assistant director (AD) with Swabhiman (directed by Mahesh Bhatt) that aired on DD National. During my tenure as an AD, I realized that I was inclined towards writing and that this job was not my cup of tea. Hence I quit the job and started writing jingles for advertising companies and daily soaps such as Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Jab Love Hua (Zee TV) and Zaara (Sahara One). Later I was called to write for a daily soap for SAB TV. And after that things changed dramatically when I was offered FIR in 2006. And there has been no looking back for me since then. Later I got into writing for films when David Dhawan gave me a break when I wrote for his film Do Knot Disturb that released in 2009. And in 2012, I wrote for Remo’s successful film ABCD. We are sure you must have faced hurdles in your career… Yes, when I came to Mumbai there was no one to depend upon. So, yes during the initial stages I did face a lot of problems. What are your key responsibilities as a writer? Well, writing and conceptualizing the characters is my forte. Do you face any problems while conceptualizing the characters or writing a script? Look, I do not know about others, but for me it is not a problem at all because I find my characters in real life people and imbibe them in my stories. To be a writer you need to be a great observer and I, for one, possess that talent. Being a writer, your job must be very hectic? Oh no not at all; I write my script at night till 4 am in the morning, meet people for official work during the day and in the evening have a blast with my family. As a matter of fact, you will see me travelling the world half of the year. If not a writer, what would you have been? In that case I would be a politician. I write speeches for a lot of politicians and with the power of speech I would do very well. Your message to new aspirants? I would like to say that the writer should know the in and out personality, his background and the past of his character. A writer should also read his script as a viewer to understand better whether it will establish connect with the masses or not. Apart from that I watch my own show to improvise on the script.
