2013: Flop shows of the year
The year 2013 was a kind of zig zag ride for television shows across all GECs. This year while a lot of shows like Balika Vadhu, Diya Aur Baati Hum, Jodha Akbar et al managed to create a niche for themselves, there were others that struggled and failed to survive. Here in this piece, Tellychakkar.com gets you a list of shows that flopped this year (basically the ones that tumbled down the TVT ladder and later got axed). (List is arranged alphabetically) Amita Ka Amit (Swastik Pictures): Siddharth Tewari’s effort to tie two conventionally not-so-good looking people in matrimony did not work well for Sony Entertainment Television. The story, that started with Amita (Chandani Bhagwanani) marrying Amit (Nishad Vaidya), falling in love, parting ways and later getting back together post a six month leap, failed to create the Mahi Way (the tale of a fat girl) magic. In fact recently, the creatives also brought in a negative character called Kajari (Jayshree Soni) to give the show a Balaji kind of twist, but nothing seems to be saving this ship from sinking. The show is all set to come to an end sometime this month. Anamika (Trishula Productions): This is yet another Sony Entertainment Television show that failed to see the sunshine, courtesy the pretty witch Anamika. This story of a witch falling for a human being did not go down well with humans (audiences) and the show took a nosedive in no time. In fact, the creatives seemed too confused with its storyline as they kept killing people and getting their souls back to the show. On the whole this was a complicated drama with some supernatural element but it got big numbers of ‘thumbs down’. Badalte Rishton Ki Dastaan (Ravi Ojha Productions): This Zee TV show was something that the viewers expected a lot from. But it failed to deliver due to its not-so-gripping storyline. It was indeed surprising to see the makers of Sasural Genda Phool make a show like Badalte…Moreover it was disheartening to see a show with an awesome cast comprising of Kiran Karmarkar, Additi Gupta and Sanjeeda Sheikh failing by the wayside. This was definitely one of the biggest flops of this year. Chhanchhan (Optimystix): Sanaya Irani is a big and popular name in the world of television but even her presence could not make this show a hit. The show, again a Sony Entertainment Television product, was shut in a matter of few months of its launch and was wrapped in controversy given its casting woes. Farhan Khan was roped to play the lead but later the creatives considered it to be a wrong move and replaced Farhan with Anuj Sachdeva. But by then it was too late and the show had lost its fizz. Chhanchhan is one of the biggest duds of the year. Do Dil Ek Jaan (Nautanki Telefilms/ BAG Films): Post Madhublala- Ek Ishq Ek Junoon, everybody expected …Jaan to be a big hit, but that wasn’t the case with this love story. The love story of a Mumbai ka ladka and Kashmir ki kali failed to deliver. We do not doubt the creative skills of producer and writer Saurabh Tiwari but then they did fail at the casting level this time. In fact, the news of the leads being replaced has been doing the rounds for a while. We hope the new faces manage to do some justice to this love story. Sex is not what sells on the small screen – remember the ‘smooch’ scene between Nikita Sharma and Ayaz Ahmed! Well that too couldn’t up the numbers. Ek Ghar Banaunga (Village Boy Productions): This Star Plus love story of Poonam and Akash is an interesting one as the latter has taken up the responsibility of his wife’s family upon himself. So, in short, he is an ideal husband. So what is it that’s turning it into a flop? Well, it’s the show’s time slot. Yes Ek Ghar Banaunga airs at 6:30 pm. And in spite of having talented artistes in newcomers like Ishita Dutta and Rahul Sharma, the show is failing on the TVT charts. A change in time-slot and some promotion might save it from doom. Ghar Aaja Pardesi (Sai Baba Telefilms): Producer Gajendra Singh almost burnt his fingers while making this family drama for Sahara One. He roped in known names like Smita Jaykar and Vikram Gokhale but none of that seemed to work. Yes, the channel did not wait for this serial to establish itself and pulled it off-air which came as a big shock to the reality expert Gajendra and his team. Mujhse Kuchh Kehti …. Yeh Khamoshiyaan (Trilogy Krikos/ Thought Train Entertainment): The phrase – Do naiyaan mein pair rakhne wale aksar dub jate hain (when you have your feet on two boats, you’re bound to sink) actually came true in this case. The disputes between the creatives and production people actually started showing on the creative level which took the show down the drains. The pair of newcomer Mrunal Thakur and Mohit Sehgal too failed to work for the show. Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha – Season 2 (Sunshine Productions): The cute and adorable love story of Mohan and Megha did work in the first season but its second season failed to reach the same stature (as the first). However there is no denying that Akanksha Singh and Kunal Karan Kapoor gave some spectacular performances even in the second season as parents of children of their own age. But, the show never managed to climb the TVT charts and soon faded away. Punar Vivah – Ek Nayi Umeed (Shashi Sumeet Mittal Productions): The Season One of Punar Vivah was a hit with Aarti and Yash becoming the favourites of the masses but Raj and Sarita (the leads of the second season) couldn’t make that kind of an impact in the hearts of the viewers. In fact, Parul Chauhan and Eijaz Khan's entry on the show too remained unsuccessful. Hence Zee TV finally pulled the plug on it Sanskaar- Dharohar Apno Ki (Cinemantra/Anahita Productions): This family story of a Vaishnav family not just failed to establish itself once but twice. Yes, the makers got an opportunity to make a comeback with the Second season but even that seems to be heading nowhere. The show hasn’t yet picked up on the TVT charts.
