American Shows That Should Be Remade Into Desi Soaps

For some of us, watching American shows is the closest we would come to understanding their cultures and habits. It gives us a sense of freedom and definitely inspires us to explore the west. Our ideologies may clash, but when it comes to entertainment, American shows rule our telly.

Here are five such shows that should be remade into Desi soaps. Read on:

House MD:

Genius. Eccentric. Moody. When a doctor has these qualities, you wouldn't expect the show to be anything other than awesome, eh? This medical drama, starring Brit actor Hugh Laurie as Gregory House, was one of the most popular shows in the last decade. It had many season revivals and was lapped up both by American and Indian audiences alike. On our small screen, we don't have a show like House MD, despite attempting mediocre ones like Sanjeevani and Dil Mill Gayye. Perhaps our fault was in making the soaps too lovey-dovey and not about diagnosis and treatment. Let's hope that somebody takes a cue and remakes this classic.

Castle:

Indian TV's longest running crime-solving show CID is more of a mockery than a edgy, thrilling crime fiction show. Castle, named after the lead writer-turned-investigator Richard Castle, is one of the most popular crime shows aboard. It has a story line that's episodic and not completely mind-numbing like its Indian counterparts. We wish that this writer-detective drama is made into an Indian show with the same logic and brilliance.

Desperate Housewives:

We desperately need a show that tells women in our society that having fun isn't such a taboo. That marriage needn't be the end of life. In a country where women lose their sheen and importance post-marriage and forget to live their lives on their own terms, something like Desperate Housewives is required. While Bollywood constantly borrows plots from this American drama, TV has somehow shied away from it. Time to change that, eh?

Friends:

Arguably the most popular show on television ever, this coming-of-age story has broken many a records. While we have attempted many such remakes, they have all fallen flat thanks to the level of immaturity the shows brought forward. We need a story that's not afraid to portray what the 20-somethings are actually going through. We don't always have to adapt to our mindset. Live-in, dating, long distance relationships and the like are all common issues even in our society.

Breaking Bad:

A genius crime drama, it had the nation going crazy over the lead character Walter White's antics. There were feelers in the Indian industry that Amitabh Bachchan's Yudh was inspired by this American hit. But it wasn't. It didn't posses the beauty and ruthlessness of the award-winning western show. But if there's any show that Indians would love to watch on TV in a desi avatar, it is this one. Considering how big we are on family dramas and gangster issues, this show is perfect for us.

Which American show do you want to see being remade into Hindi? Let us know!
