Janmashtami is popularly known in Mumbai and Pune as Dahi Handi. Devotees of Lord Krishna celebrate this festival with lot of joy and zeal.
The ritual of Dahi Handi is carried out with much fanfare and joy. Human pyramid is formed to break the Handi (Earthen Pot) balanced from top with the help of a rope. The exciting process involves spilling of water by the viewers to prevent the boys from breaking the pot. In Mumbai alone, it is believed that more than a lakh people will participate in Dahi Handi celebrations.
