One of the most underrated warriors of the Mahabharata was Surya and Kunti’s warrior son, Karn. He was dynamic, virtuous, dedicated and an archer par excellence. In fact, to some fans of the epic tale, he is the real hero.
It’s no wonder that his illustrious life is being projected on the small screen on Sony TV’s Suryaputra Karn.
In today’s digital age, the kavach-kundal-sporting hero is still relevant as his selflessness, valour, sacrifice and passion are his trademark qualities…we tell you why. Take a look:
He fought misfortune all his life, yet overcame them:
In an era where we lose hop over the silliest of things, there was a warrior who was born with a curse and endured many misfortune in his life. But he overcame them all with his grit and determination. Even though he was born into high class, he was adopted by a charioteer couple, hence he was not allowed to learn archery. But the naturally skilled warrior was better with bows and arrows than Arjun himself. Or at least, that’s what his die-hard fans say.
His respect for Kunti:
Despite Kunti’s abandonment (Karn is her illegitimate child), Karn never disrespected her. He readily sacrificed his life for that of his more famous brothers, the Pandavas. When Kunti begs Karn to not fight his own brother Arjun, her eldest son assures her that by the end of the war, Kunti would still have five sons.
Passion is everything:
He was passionate about archery and he honed his skills despite opposition from every angle. He was as good as his younger brother Arjun. In fact, he could have defeated Arjun in the war. But he was not unable to do so due to a curse that made him forget his essential fighting skills right when it was required the most.
His charity was legendary:
Nobody gave away alms to the poor and the needy like the mighty Karn. Even when Indira, disguised as a poor Brahmin, asked Karn for his kavach-Kundals, the latter readily agreed to part with his most prized possessions. Karn was aware of Indira’s (Arjun’s father) intentions, but didn’t shy away doing the right thing…such was the power of his words, his loyalty and his sense of truthfulness.
