Women can make a fool of you on television and how!

Television as a medium has its own limitations. As by now, almost all of us know that it’s only the saas bahu sagas in different shapes and sizes that work. However much you may argue that saas bahu shows have been dead and that audiences do not want them anymore the fact remains this genre still works for most channels.
Television as a medium has its own limitations. As by now, almost all of us know that it’s only the saas bahu sagas in different shapes and sizes that work. However much you may argue that saas bahu shows have been dead and that audiences do not want them anymore the fact remains this genre still works for most channels. Now coming to the very important question is that the show may offer a staple diet to audiences and keep them satisfied but does it satisfy the actors enough? No, say most actors. And though many of them continue doing them for various reasons, a lot many make their choices. In fact, the talented lot of actors is so frustrated with the work they are offered on the small screen that they choose not to do any, rather than do the same boring stuff day in and day out. And thank God for the slew of comedy shows that are on different channels, they have an option. Earlier prime time slots were reserved for soaps. An occasional Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai or Khichdi did pop up but there was not much enough happening in terms of comedy. Now there is more comic fare and hence actors too who need to extend their boundaries take them on. So now beautiful actresses too are opting for comic roles! Comedy, until now, has been a male domain but is now inundated with female actors. As against earlier, when comedy shows were done by a Supriya Pathak or Ratna Pathak Shah, now the long-legged Kavita Kaushik (FIR) or the beautiful Divyanka Tripathi (Mrs and Mr Sharma Allahabadwale) or the cute and bubbly Disha Vakani (Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah), the sprightly Ragini Khanna (in the rom-com Sasural Genda Phool) and even the attractive Ami Trivedi (Papad Pol) and the list continues. Viewers are accepting women in comic roles and this is giving all actresses who want to experiment with this genre a chance to venture into an unknown area. Whilst these women are seen in fictional comedy shows there are many who don’t shy away from stand-up comedy as well. Though stand-up comedy arrived late in our country it now appears it is here to stay. Urvashi Dholakia, Karishma Tanna, Kamya Punjabi, Roshni Chopra, Anita Hasanandani, Rashmi Desai have all tried their hand as stand-up artists. Actresses confess doing comedy shows gives them a different high. They say they were dying as actors when all they did was cry in soaps. One actress claims that applying glycerine was the first thing she did when she entered the sets and at the end of the day how many different ways could she find to cry? So when she was offered a comedy show she grabbed it as this gave her a chance to prove her talent. Yet another reason for opting for a comedy shows stems from the motivation that a comedy show gives them a chance to entertain a viewer who is all the time stressed and tense. How many people really want to go back home and watch a tearjerker? And more so, with the kind of comedy shows made now, where an actress is not a caricature but gets an opportunity to showcase her talent. Earlier comedy was only of the slapstick variety where all actors had to do was play the proverbial joker. An actress has even confessed that when doing a comic role she is not required to show skin and bare it all. All she has to do is make the audience laugh. Having said that, comic actors are not the mundane, boring kind. Now you have the good looking and svelte kinds looking like a million bucks doing comic roles (Kavita Kaushik in FIR or a stunning Jennifer Winget in Comedy Circus). Not only are these beautiful girls acting in comic shows they are also seen hosting them. Purbi Joshi, Jennifer, Anita, Shruti Seth are a top recall. And then there is Archana Puran Singh, the permanent fixture on the judge’s chair of Comedy Circus. So all in all women are now taking comedy very seriously and doing a good job at it. Just proves that women can make a fool of you and how. Read more...
