MUMBAI: The love stories of some celebrity couples give serious relationship goals to their fans and followers. The way they love and respect each other, the way they stand by each other through thick and thin move people emotionally. One such story is of Sunil Chhetri and his wife Sonam Bhattacharya.
Sunil Chhetri fell in love with Sonam Bhattacharya, who is his coach and football legend Subrata Bhattacharya’s daughter.

However, it is not that he saw her and fell in love at that moment. In fact, when he saw Sonam for the first time, he walked off. Revealing what happened on their first meeting, the footballer had shared with the Humans of Bombay, “Her dad was my coach and he used to always mention this guy, ‘Chhetri’ to her. I was 18 and she was 15. She was curious so she stole my number from her dad and texted me saying, ‘Hi! I’m Sonam and I’m a big fan, I want to meet you!’. I had no idea who she was. She was sweet on text so I decided to meet her—when we met I realised that she was a kid! I told her, ‘You’re a kid, go study’ and walked off. But for some reason, we didn’t stop texting.”
And gradually, they became a couple and finally, after dating for a long time they tied the knot with each other.
Their love story is certainly unique, cute, and beautiful.
But was the journey smooth? How did his coach react upon knowing that Sunil was dating his daughter?
Well, Sunil was filled with jitters when he walked to Sonam’s house to talk to her dad. He shared, “When we sat down, her dad started talking about everything under the sun. Until I finally mustered the courage and told him, ‘Sir, I love your daughter and I believe she loves me too’. He just said, ‘Ya, ya it’s okay’ and went to the bathroom. Finally when he came out, he gave his nod of approval! And in a few months, we got married.”
The couple dated for 13 long years before tying the knot.
