MUMBAI: In a significant legal development, the Bombay High Court has expedited the divorce proceedings between Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his estranged wife, Dhanashree Verma.

The court granted a waiver for the mandatory six-month cooling-off period typically required in cases of mutual consent divorce, considering Chahal’s professional commitments.

Justice Madhav Jamdar directed the Bandra family court to finalise the couple’s divorce plea by 20th March, as Chahal would be unavailable after 21st March due to his participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The star spinner is set to represent Punjab Kings in the upcoming tournament, which commences on 22nd March.

Chahal and Verma had jointly petitioned the high court, challenging the family court’s previous ruling on 20th February, which had refused to waive the cooling-off period.

Granting relief to the duo, Justice Jamdar acknowledged that the two had been living separately for over two and a half years and had reached an understanding during mediation.

The high court took into account that there was substantial compliance with the consent terms related to alimony payments.

The family court had initially rejected their plea, citing only partial adherence to the agreed terms.

As per CNN News 18 reports, Chahal was required to pay Rs 4.75 crore to Dhanashree as part of the settlement, of which Rs 2.37 crore had been paid.

The marriage counsellor’s report also reflected partial compliance.

The couple tied the knot in December 2020 but separated in June 2022.

Their legal battle has garnered widespread attention on social media, with speculation surrounding their relationship making headlines in recent months.

With the Bombay High Court’s intervention, the finalisation of their divorce proceedings is now imminent, allowing both individuals to move forward with their respective lives.

As Chahal gears up for the IPL season, this legal closure marks the end of an important chapter in his personal life.
