MUMBAI: Amit Malik is currently the director of one of the most spoken about projects on television, Ziddi Dil Maane Na. In an exclusive conversation with Amit, he shared his journey in the entertainment industry.

Amit, can you elaborate on your journey in the industry?

I came in Mumbai around 20-21 years ago, I didn’t know anyone here, at that time there was no media, no digital , we got information only through newspapers so that’s what brought me here. Slowly some of them from television started to recognise my talent and I got connected to them. At first I was assistant director at Sagar Arts for Hello Dolly serial. There my boss was Nisar Parwez who is now an actor and producer. I came under him and learnt a lot of things and I assisted him for 5-6 years and he gave me a big break for the show Dil Mil Gaye on Star One. So, I got a chance to direct that show. After that show everything became nice and since then I’ve directed almost 40 shows and latest of them is Ziddi Dil Maane Na. I did more of the romantic shows like Madhubala and even mythology like Siya Ke Ram and Mahadev.

What type of challenges do you face in your profession?

Most of the challenges are faced by directors only in terms of how I can make this show different from other shows. None of my show matches the other show technically. I keep on trying how I can make the tables different from the other show. And the other challenges are there are 8-10 characters in the show and they know about themselves and they know their work but for me I have to know about all 8-10 characters and what they have to do. Other than that there are telecast challenges. If one scene is proper everybody should like it. We have to see where the TRP is increasing or decreasing too.

What is so different in this show in terms of direction?

You’ll understand whenever it is telecasts. It is a very natural show like how we speak in our homes with our mom, dad, on roads, in bus , in college, the way we talk there is very different and when we come in front of the camera we realise we have to act which changes all the body language and tone, but in this show you’ll never realise anybody’s acting , it is very natural like we are talking with our family or friends and all the creating lighting is very different you’ll come to know once the show is out.

In terms of actors, do they contribute their creative inputs in the show or you have to tell them to do likewise?

See there are two types of directors in the industry one who makes the scene like they get the scene and they start doing it and the others are those who think and then they do it. With me, I first think what the scene will be and then do it. I get into the character, read the lines and visualise them and then the shot is been shot , so I can convince any actor to do the scene correctly and many times their input is way better than ours and we keep them it’s not like that they have to do it only our way.
