MUMBAI: While the reality TV show Bigg Boss 14 is filled with drama and controversies, it does give us more to think about our celebrity's personal lives. We become more acquainted with how the contestants, whom we are often used to seeing on the screen, function in their day-to-day lives. Not just this, the show also puts celebrity contestants in tough spots where they are expected to reveal some dark secrets about themselves and this is exactly what happened in the latest promo of the fourth season.
Rubina Dialik was given an immunity stone which was up for grabs and all other contestants had to do to win it was to reveal one thing that no one or only a handful of people know about them. This particular task created an overwhelming climate in the Bigg Boss house especially after Eijaz Khan opened up about being a victim of 'inappropriate touch' as a child.
The actor revealed that because of the shocking incident that happened when he was a child, he fears being touched even now. While sharing this anecdote, Eijaz broke down and shared that he regrets not telling his father about this incident. The actor also said that he does not blame himself for he was not at fault.
Apart from Eijaz, there are a handful of celebrities who have taken to public spaces to open up about falling victim to sexual misconduct.
Actor Akshay Kumar had once revealed that as a kid he was inappropriately touched by a lift operator. The actor shared that he was just 6 years old and since that horrifying incident, he hesitates from using the word 'bum'. Reportedly, the actor had said, "When I was six, I was on my way to a neighbour's house when the lift man touched my butt.". Akshay, unlike Eijaz, complained to his father about the lift operator and was able to seek legal help.
Dev D actress Kalki Koechlin had also revealed being a victim of child abuse as well. The actress revealed that she was only nine when the incident took place and did not open about it because she felt it was her fault. She refrained from sharing details about her childhood until that day because she 'did not want people to feel sorry' for her. She spoke about it to normalise it for other people who have been in such situations. "It's important that [arents remove the taboo around the word sex or private parts so kids can speak openly and be saved from potential abuse.", added Kalki.
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who's known best for his unapologetic and unfiltered flicks, lived through a rather troubled childhood. According to a throwback report, Anurag was molested by a man aged-22 and it continued for nearly 11 years. The filmmaker was brimming with 'bitterness' when he met that man after many years, however, managed to forgive him because he seemed 'guilt-ridden'. "He was guilt-ridden when we met. I decided to put the whole nightmare behind me and move on. But it wasn't easy. I came to Mumbai brimming with angst, bitterness, and a sense of violation and isolation.", shared Anurag. During the interview, Anurag did share that he was able to grow past the incident with the support of his ex-wife Kalki Koechlin.
When Eijaz Khan recounted his experience, Kavita Kaushik, who appears to be his nemesis on the show, comforted him with a hug.
One of the main reasons why people are afraid of bringing such sensitive stuff up is because they fear being judged or frowned upon. It is thus important for us and others to offer victims of abuse a safe and comfortable space to be able to open up and heal.
