I had just 14 bucks in my bank account

A page from the personal diary of Reshmi Ghosh When I look back at the decade that I have spent in this industry, I would find it very difficult to pin point a particular moment that has left an imprint on my mind simply because there are so many. There have been phases that have taught me a lot. I still remember the time when I was doing films – almost immediately after Miss India. I was working in many films, but none of them were releasing and I was not getting paid for any of them. Things got so bad that there was a phase when I had just 14 bucks in my bank account. And I believe so much in supporting myself that it was very tough for me to ask dad for help. He knew, of course, and was glad to help, but I felt like a parasite. It was difficult for me to understand why this was happening to me. I was honest with myself and my work, but I was completely out of luck. Television was the stroke of luck that brought me out of the situation. I’ll always be grateful to Balaji Telefilms and Ekta for giving me a break. Things started looking up after that. It made me realise how important time, rather, timing, is in life. Everything happens at the correct time – sometimes, the wait may be long. Now, I’m getting several film offers as well. But I’ll think a hundred times before accepting a film. Some cherished moments are those in Nach Baliye. Amit and I have worked together before. We have done theatre together and of course, we are going to spend our entire life together, but Nach Baliye was different. I was completely touched and emotional when he proposed to me on stage in front of my parents. I’ll never let go of that moment. God knows how life will turn; which way it will go, but these moments have made life richer for me.
