MUMBAI: As tensions escalate along the Line of Control, Jammu and Kashmir continues to reel under the shadow of drone warfare, with civilians living in a state of heightened anxiety. In a chilling reminder of the region's volatile security situation, drone incursions and explosions have rattled several areas, leaving residents alarmed and uncertain.
Reports emerged yesterday of an attempted drone-led assault allegedly originating from Pakistan, targeting areas within Jammu. The incident sparked widespread panic among locals, many of whom took to social media to share their distress. Among them were several well-known personalities with ties to the region, who voiced their concern for their loved ones.
Umar Riaz, a well-known actor and medical professional currently residing in Jammu, took to social media to describe the harrowing situation on the ground. “It’s terrifying,” he said. “Living here amidst the constant sound of drones and explosions feels like we’re in the middle of a war zone.” Riaz also posted a video capturing the moment a drone was shot down in his vicinity, while strongly criticising certain sections of the media for their insensitive and inadequate coverage of the conflict.
Aly Goni, another prominent figure originally from Jammu, expressed his anguish from abroad. Currently out of India for an upcoming project, the actor shared a heartfelt post featuring a family photo, captioned:"Sleepless and shattered, stuck out of India as my family in Jammu endures last night’s attack. My whole family, children, and parents face the terror of drones and unrest, yet some people glorify this war from the comfort of their homes, posting on social media. It’s not that easy for those near the border. Thanks to our IAF and Indian Army."Goni’s message resonated with many, shedding light on the emotional toll the ongoing conflict is having on families far from the public eye.
Meanwhile, Samar Raina, who recently faced controversy in the public sphere, also opened up about his fears. Though currently not in Jammu himself, he revealed that his family remains in the region. “When I spoke to my father, he tried to sound calm so I wouldn’t worry, but I could tell they’re living in fear. As long as this conflict continues, that fear will live with us every day,” he stated.
The mounting drone activity across the Jammu region has prompted swift responses from Indian defence forces, with increased aerial surveillance, ground patrols, and public safety measures being implemented. The Director General of Police has reiterated that individuals attempting to interact with or recover drone-dropped items will face the full force of anti-terrorism laws.”
The actors have thanked the Indian forces for protecting their family and motherland from the drone attacks from Pakistan.
As fear and uncertainty grip communities on both sides of the border, calls for peace have grown louder. While the military continues to work tirelessly to ensure the safety of civilians, voices from the region including those of high-profile individuals underline the urgent human cost of this modern warfare.
For now, the people of Jammu endure each day with quiet resilience, hoping for a return to normalcy and the end of the hostilities that have upended their lives.
