MUMBAI: Producer Abhigyan Jha, who has written films like Krishna Cottage and created shows like Movers & Shakers, Jay Hind!, Qubool Hai 2.0, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, and Janani - AI Ki Kahani, to name some, feels that IPL, in its own space, is a very good programme.
He said, "It perhaps is not as good as it was in the second season. Many seasons have happened, but they have never managed to go back to that level. But then still, it is cricket. And at least there is some quality to cricket that no other kind of program has because it is not in the hands of television."
"Cricket is in the hands of BCCI. They manage far better than our film industry and our television industry. IPL is one of India's greatest product success stories. There has been no product which has been made this valuable in India in the last 15-16 years. And it shows that India has a large market," he added.
Looking at IPL and how BCCI controls and holds all the rights to it, Abhigyan feels that channel executives should learn from it and leave the shows only to the producers without any interference from their side.
"I think that model should come on TV now where the rights belong to producers and we make our shows the way we want and they get as much TRP for it. I don't mind people wanting TRP. That's the business. But don't tell people what to do. The producers know what to do. They anyway remove the shows that don't do well, so if they don't work, remove them. But when you're doing a show, let them do what they want. IPL doesn't have channel executives telling them what to do," he said.
He feels if the channels try to tell the producers what to do, they will never be able to match up with IPL.
"IPL is an independent program. So nothing will ever be able to compete with independent programmes," he said.
