“Kaikeyi had qualities like strength, sincerity, and maternal love but she's mostly remembered for her ambition”: Hunar Hali Gandhi on playing Queen Kaikeyi in Sony SAB’s Veer Hanuman

Hunar Hali Gandhi

MUMBAI: Hunar Hali Gandhi is earning widespread praise for her compelling portrayal of Queen Kaikeyi in Sony SAB’s mythological series Veer Hanuman. Known for her emotional depth and grace, Hunar brings nuance and empathy to a character often remembered only for her choices. Veer Hanuman traces the early life of Lord Hanuman.

In this candid conversation, Hunar opens up about playing Queen Kaikeyi and her admiration for Hanuman Ji's values among more.

1. What was your reaction when you were offered the role of Queen Kaikeyi?
I was extremely elated! After portraying Goddess Rukmini four years ago, I had been hoping to return to the mythological space, and the role of Queen Kaikeyi in Veer Hanuman came at the perfect time. The work environment is incredibly supportive and professional; it truly feels like being part of something special.

2. What has been the most rewarding and difficult part about playing Queen Kaikeyi?
The detailing is on another level. Wearing the heavy jewelry, wig, crown, and elaborate costume while shooting in the heat is physically demanding. Yet, I carry it all with a smile because the reward is in the audience's connection. When people relate to your character emotionally, it makes everything worth it.

3. How did you prepare to step into the role of Kaikeyi, an iconic and complex character from Indian mythology?
Mythology demands a sense of therav (pause), grace, and correctness in speech and movement. Kaikeyi was a warrior queen, so fitness and poise were essential. I focused deeply on her emotional landscape, her devotion, her love for Lord Ram, and her internal conflicts. Kaikeyi is often seen through a one-dimensional lens, but she was much more than her one decision that led to the exile of Lord Rama for. She was loving and brave.

4. How do you emotionally connect with Kaikeyi’s actions and intentions as a mother and queen? Do you empathize with her choices?
Absolutely. What resonates with me is that life often judges us for one mistake, forgetting the many good things we do. That’s exactly what happened with Kaikeyi. Despite her qualities, strength, sincerity, and maternal love, she's mostly remembered for her ambition. Veer Hanuman focuses on her softer side. My scenes with young Lord Ram are filled with warmth and genuine affection. It allows me to show her as a multi-dimensional mother and woman.

5. Mythological shows involve elaborate costumes, language, and set-ups. What were your thoughts on experiencing all of that on your first day on set?
I was truly in awe. As someone who doesn’t have children, playing a mother to Lord Ram has been emotionally gratifying. That’s the beauty of acting: it allows you to live out roles and relationships you may never experience in real life. Kaikeyi’s look and presence made me feel regal, strong, and connected from day one.

6. The show highlights Lord Hanuman bravery, strength, and devotion to Lord Ram. Which of his qualities do you admire the most?
Lord Hanuman is the epitome of loyalty, selflessness, and humility. Sadly, these values are fading in today’s world. Trust can be fragile; I’ve had close friendships fall apart unexpectedly. That’s why I value honesty and loyalty so deeply. Lord Hanuman reminds us of the purity in relationships and the strength in serving without ego.

7. Since you have started shooting recently, how is your bond developing with your co-actors?
Tanmay Rishi, who plays the young Lord Ram, is incredibly endearing. To bond better on-screen, I understood more about his relationship with his real mom, and he was so sweet and helpful. His professionalism is impressive for someone so young. I make it a point to greet everyone with a smile and set the tone for a positive working day

8. What can audiences look forward to in the upcoming episodes of Veer Hanuman?
With the Ayodhya track in full swing, audiences will witness the unbreakable bond between Lord Ram and Lord Hanuman. The show brings out themes of loyalty, courage, devotion, and inner conflict. It’s a spiritual and emotional journey that offers viewers both inspiration and connection.

Tune in to Veer Hanuman every Monday to Saturday at 7.30 PM, only on Sony SAB
