MUMBAI: With a string of popular shows to her credit, including Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, Kasautii Zindagii Kay, and Dil Ko Tumse Pyaar Hua, actress Shubhaavi Choksey has firmly established herself as one of the most recognised faces on Indian television.
In an exclusive conversation with TellyChakkar, the seasoned actress opened up about her journey in the industry, her perspective on typecasting, and how she views emerging formats like music videos and OTT platforms.
You've been a part of some iconic television shows. Do you believe actors today are exploring new mediums like music videos to expand their reach?
Absolutely. For me, any medium is worthwhile if the role and the script are strong. Whether it's television, OTT, films, or even a music video, what truly matters is the content and how the actor connects with it. As performers, we should feel fulfilled by the characters we portray. Entertainment is, after all, about evoking emotion – no matter the platform.
The issue of typecasting seems to be a recurring theme in the industry. What are your thoughts on this?
Oh yes, it’s very much present. But let’s not put all the blame on the industry. The audience too, sometimes unknowingly, contributes to the stereotyping of actors. Certain roles stick with viewers, and they struggle to see us beyond that. Some actors manage to break free quickly, while for others – like me – it takes time. But eventually, with consistent and good work, one can break the mould.
Would you say the size of the role or platform matters to you?
Not at all. There’s no such thing as a ‘small’ role – every character has its own significance. Whether I’m on television, in a web series or a film, the substance of the role is what I truly care about. As actors, our job is to bring that character to life and deliver something meaningful to the audience.
With her grounded approach and clarity on her craft, Shubhaavi Choksey continues to win hearts across generations. Known not just for her performances but also for her candid nature, she remains an inspiration for many aspiring actors who wish to carve a niche beyond the labels and limitations.
