Veteran actress Simple Kaul, who surprised everyone with a rustic cameo in SAB TV’s Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, is back to playing a modern glam character. She has just made an entry in Channel V’s Suvreen Guggal – Topper Of The Year. Talking about her character Ira Shawney, Simple, who was first noticed in Shararat, says, “I play a stylish, attractive, up market owner of a fashion house. She is an aggressive go-getter and extremely professional business woman who is ready to push her employees to the limit, for she believes that people put their best foot forward under pressure. Hence she bosses over Suvreen (Smriti Kalra) but only for her benefit.” Explaining her rationale for taking up this youth show, she says, “Out of all the offers I was getting, it was the best option. Channel V caters to youth audiences which is surely an advantage. Also it was not a comedy and I hardly fit in saas bahu drama kind of shows, anyways.” Do you play a positive or a negative character as you have played more of vampish roles (Teen Bahuraniyaan and Saas Bina Sasural)? “Ira is an out and out white character. RC (Mohit Malik) is her best friend, she loves him but he has feelings for Suvreen. So there will be a love triangle. I don’t know much about the story as my track has just begun.” Simple likes her character because “it is very relatable and the lingo she uses is likeable”. She is also like most professionals of the day, very formal with the students at her workplace, but very casual with her friends. She jokes around and does not mind taking digs even at her own self as well. Ask her about her Taarak Mehta experience and she says, “It was fun. Being such a popular show, I was noticed from the second day onwards itself. It was really interesting to play something what I have never done before. It was difficult for people, who knew me, to recognize me in such a de-glam avatar.” “As an actor it is great to portray two totally opposite characters, as it shows your caliber. But, if you ask me, I am more comfortable playing this character for many a times when we do the scenes especially with Mohit, it does not look like that we are acting. The lines are so day-to-day that we forget that we are acting. The dialogues and performances required are also subdued and not over the top as those of most daily shows are,” she ends.
