MUMBAI: On World Tourism Day, actor and entrepreneur Nikhil Nanda shares his thoughts on how cinema has the power to inspire travel dreams. Known for his passion for both acting and exploring new ventures, Nanda emphasizes the strong connection between films and tourism, drawing from his own experiences as a traveler.
“Switzerland has become a dream destination for many in India, primarily because of how Yashraj Films portrayed it. Movies like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) made places like Interlaken iconic, and that’s one of the reasons I always wanted to visit," Nanda reveals. "I made every effort to fulfill that dream, and I finally got to visit Interlaken. It was just as magical as I imagined." The influence of Bollywood on Indian tourists’ destination choices has been undeniable. The romantic snow-capped mountains and picturesque landscapes shown in films have inspired countless people to visit Switzerland, among other scenic locations. Nanda firmly believes that films are a major driver of tourism. “I truly believe that films, and the way destinations are showcased in them, have a huge impact on boosting tourism to those places,”
Nanda adds. "Whether it’s Switzerland, Spain, or even local destinations within India, cinema can create a lasting impression that makes people want to experience those places for themselves." On this World Tourism Day, Nikhil Nanda reminds us of the unique role that films play in promoting global tourism, encouraging travelers to seek out their dream destinations—just as he did with Interlaken. His words resonate with the belief that travel, like cinema, is a way of enriching lives and broadening horizons.
