MUMBAI: Sony SAB's Tenali Rama continues to win hearts with its delightful mix of humor, intelligence, and emotions, bringing the legendary wit of Tenali Rama ( Krishna Bharadwaj) to life. With the show’s return, fans are excited to see Priyamvada Kant reprising her beloved role as Sharda, Tenali Rama’s wife.
Sharda, a character that has always held a special place in Priyamvada’s heart, is a woman of strength and emotional intelligence. As the show progresses, Sharda’s character has also undergone significant growth. In this exclusive conversation, Priyamvada Kant opens up about her return to Tenali Rama, the growth of Sharda's character, her deep connection to the role, and what fans can expect in the upcoming episodes.
You were a part of Tenali Rama earlier, and now you're back as Sharda. How did it feel to reprise this role?
Getting back on Tenali Rama was an incredible experience! Especially because I never thought the show would make a comeback. But for the past six years, I’ve constantly received messages from fans asking me to come back as Sharda. When the opportunity finally came, it worked out. In fact, fans even dug out an old interview of mine where I had said that if Tenali Rama ever returned, I’d definitely be a part of it. And here we are. Also, the love from the audience has been twice as much this time around. My Instagram posts were flooded with comments of “Utha Lo,” my iconic punchline as Sharda, which truly shows how deeply connected fans are to the character. It's been a heartwarming experience to return to something that has been so cherished by everyone!
How different was your approach to playing Sharda this time?
This time, the show has a lot more emotional depth. While the earlier chapter focused more on humor, this version brings out the family values, relationships, and emotional highs and lows and more. Sharda, too, has evolved. She’s still the loving, supportive wife, but now she has a higher emotional quotient. However, playing Sharda comes naturally to me. It feels like stepping back into a role that has always been close to my heart.
What’s the most rewarding part of bringing Sharda to life?
It has to be the love from the audience. There’s no greater reward than people appreciating your work, recognizing your character, and genuinely connecting with it. I constantly receive messages, fan edits, and appreciation from viewers. It’s been a mix of old and new fans. Old fans who loved Sharda before and new fans who are discovering her for the first time. That’s the most gratifying and satisfying element for me.
How has your on-screen and off-screen chemistry been with Krishna Bharadwaj (Tenali Rama)?
Krishna and I have always had great chemistry, both on-screen and off-screen. From the very first day, we clicked. And that has translated extremely well into our performances. Even now, we share the same friendship, but we’ve both grown over the years, as actors and as individuals. Apart from Krishna, I also share a great bond with Nimisha Ji, who plays Amma. Sharda’s character is quite challenging because Amma communicates through actions, and Sharda has to express those actions into words. It’s a unique dynamic because having a great equation off-screen makes it work effortlessly on screen.
Are there any aspects of Sharda’s personality that you personally relate to?
Sharda is strong, expressive, and emotionally intelligent, and I see parts of her in me as well. She has a sense of individuality and depth, which I really admire. She adds a touch of warmth to the show. Also, playing her allows me to tap into my playful and expressive side.
What do you think makes Sharda such a memorable character for the audience?
Sharda brings a lot of heart to the story. She is not only Tenali’s wife, she is his pillar of strength and the person who keeps everything together. Audiences see a reflection of real-life relationships in her, which makes her truly stand out.
What can viewers expect from Sharda and the show in the upcoming episodes?
There’s a lot in store for the viewers. This season brings a mix of intelligent light-heartedness, emotions and drama. Fans can expect to see Sharda’s bond with Tenali grow deeper, more family-driven moments. And of course, a lot of witty and lighthearted interactions with a stronger emotional touch this time.
