MUMBAI: DD's rerun of Ramayan triggered off the feminism debate on Twitter recently as the audience has got a chance to revisit the epic all over again.
Dipika Chikhlia, who is still addressed and known as Sita by many, spoke to Etimes TV recently.
She said, 'Lot of hate is shown towards Kaikeyi’s character but she has turned the story’s plot. The story is about relationships and her character brings twist to the plot. There is always one person in a family or an organization, who is selfish and only thinks about themselves. That is how the society and the world are. Hence, if she is hated for it then it is the right mind set to hate her. In reality, you do have such people around.'
Moreover, while some users felt Ramayan did not give fair treatment to its female characters, others felt the storyline champions women's empowerment. About this, the actress shared, 'In those days, women were treated more equally and given more respect. They had a mind of their mind. When Ram Rajya happens, he made Sita sit on the throne. That’s the kind of power Sita had. He stood by her. At every step you will realise, she might not have great dialogues but she always did what she wanted to do. The women always had the right to do what they wanted and their spouses supported them.'
Dipika is overwhelmed on seeing the phenomenal response of the audience. 'In a way, I wasn’t expecting this phenomenal response from the younger generation,' she added.
