MUMBAI: In a development that has taken the sporting world by surprise, Indian badminton icon Saina Nehwal has officially announced her separation from husband and fellow shuttler Parupalli Kashyap.
The announcement was made via her Instagram story, where she shared a heartfelt message reflecting on their journey together and their decision to part ways.
The statement read:
"Sometimes life leads us down different paths. After much reflection, Kashyap and I have decided to go our separate ways. We are prioritising peace, growth, and healing—for ourselves and one another. I’m thankful for the memories we’ve created and wish him nothing but happiness for the future. We ask for your understanding and privacy during this time."

The couple first met and trained together at the renowned Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad, eventually tying the knot in December 2018.
Over the years, they were widely admired as one of Indian sport’s most cherished couples, both on and off the court.
Interestingly, news of their separation emerged shortly after Kashyap shared a relaxed photo from the Awakenings Festival in the Netherlands, which many now see as a subtle hint at his newfound personal clarity.
Both Saina and Kashyap have significantly shaped the landscape of Indian badminton. Saina remains the first Indian woman to clinch an Olympic medal in the sport and has previously held the World No. 1 ranking.
Kashyap, a 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, reached a career-high ranking of World No. 6 before stepping away from competitive badminton in early 2024. He has since transitioned into coaching.
Saina, meanwhile, is reportedly contemplating retirement later this year, potentially bringing the curtain down on a legendary career marked by numerous accolades on the international stage.
As they now begin new journeys on their own, the outpouring of support from fans and the sports fraternity has been overwhelming. Admirers have praised the couple’s grace, mutual respect, and lasting legacy in Indian badminton.
The sporting world wishes them both continued strength, peace, and success in their respective paths ahead.
