MUMBAI: Sarabhai Vs. Sarabhai was a comedy parody that was ahead of its time and continues to make us laugh. The sitcom turned out to be a cult hit, whether it was because of Monisha's savvy negotiations and ability to save money or Maya's attitude and sardonic one-liners. Ratna Pathak Shah (played by Rupali Ganguly) once referred to herself as Monisha (Maya used to make fun of her for her 'downmarket' selections). This was during one of her previous interviews.
In an interview, Ratna Pathak Shah said, “I buy everything under Rs 5000. I don't like spending more money. I am Monisha actually. And clothes? I refuse to spend more than Rs 10,000. But I buy sarees that I come across something really unusual.”
She added, “I really feel that what we have in India, from the point of view of textiles, is just extraordinary. We are going to lose it in maybe a generation.”
She further added, “I feel, here is something which has been done with attention to detail, and with physical involvement of human beings and their hands, which need respect. So, there I'm happy to spend.”
In case you missed it, Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai concluded its first season in 2006 after making its television debut on STAR One in 2004. The sitcom, which was produced by Jamnadas Majethia's Hats Off Productions, starred a group of actors, including Rajesh Kumar, Satish Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Sumeet Raghavan, and Rupali Ganguly. The Anupamaa actress, Maya, played a middle-class homemaker, while Ratna portrayed an upper-class socialite.
