MUMBAI : Shubhangi Atre, the beautiful actor who brings Angoori Bhabi to life in &TV’s Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai, is known for her lovable innocence, comic timing and her popular catchphrase ‘Sahi Pakde Hain’. In this candid chat, the actor opens about her success, inspiration, first paycheck and more. Excerpts from the interview:
What is the best part about being an actor?
For me, it is the chance to live so many different lives! Acting lets me explore new perspectives, emotions, and characters. It is also gratifying to connect with fans and see how a character touches their lives.
If you were not an actor, what would you be doing?
I think I would be involved in something artistic—maybe a choreographer! I have always loved performing and creativity, and dancing would be a wonderful way to express that.
Did you learn to dance?
Yes, dance has always been a big part of my life! During college, I trained in Kathak, a classical Indian dance form. It taught me grace, rhythm, and discipline, which helped me a lot in my acting career as well. Kathak will always have a special place in my heart.
Does your family call you Shubhangi, or do they sometimes call you Angoori, since the character is so popular?
(Laughs) Oh, they tease me by calling me Angoori! My family is supportive and enjoys my work, so they often playfully switch between Shubhangi and Angoori. My daughter especially loves mimicking my on-screen lines—it is all wholesome fun!
Do you often find yourself saying your famous catchphrase ‘Sahi Pakde Hain’ off-screen too?
Oh yes, it has become a part of my daily life! Sometimes, I catch myself saying ‘Sahi Pakde Hain’ even when I agree with something simple, like my family suggesting what to have for dinner. It is like a reflex now! My loved one’s love teasing me about it, and it has become a fun way for me to add a little bit of Angoori to my everyday conversations!
How would you describe your style?
My style is a mix of traditional elegance and comfort. I love wearing sarees, but I also adore simple, comfortable outfits for daily wear. I think style should always make you feel confident and true to yourself.
Tell us something about your all-time favourite saree.
Oh, it must be my royal blue Kanjeevaram saree with beautiful zari work. My mother gifted it to me 15 years ago, and it is close to my heart. I wear it only on special occasions; it makes me feel so elegant!
What is one beauty item without which you cannot live?
A good kajal! I feel like Kajal instantly brightens my face, no matter how tired I am. It is my go-to for a quick and effortless look.
What is your fitness mantra?
Consistency! Fit is more about being consistent with small efforts rather than big, drastic changes. A balanced diet, a bit of yoga, and lots of water keep me energized.
Do you remember what you did with your first paycheck?
I was young when I earned my first paycheck—that was ₹300, choreographing a dance routine for a student in my college. I was so excited. It was a small amount, but it felt huge at the time! I remember spending it on sweets to celebrate with my family; it was a proud moment.
Who is your biggest inspiration in life?
My mother and father have always been my inspiration. They taught me resilience, kindness, and the value of staying grounded. I owe so much of who I am to their guidance and support.
What is a fun fact about you that fans might not know?
I am a huge foodie! I love trying new dishes, especially Indian sweets. Many people are surprised by how much I enjoy exploring sweet delicacies.
Any advice you would give to your younger self?
I would tell her to believe in herself more. There will be difficulties, but as long as you trust yourself and keep going, things have a way of working out beautifully.
