Singer turned actor Amit Tandon is a scared man these days. He fears for the safety of his three-year old daughter after he came to know of the recent spate of rapes through newspapers.
“Yesterday I heard that a four year old girl was raped in the Oshiwira locality. As a matter of fact, I happen to stay there.”
Amit, who is best known for his role of Dr. Abhimanyu Modi in Dill Mill Gayye says, “Being a husband and a father I sometimes question my decision of moving to India (he came to India to take part in Indian Idol 1). Here there is no punishment which will stop the criminals from doing what they want.”
“Back in the US, we don’t have as many rapes. There are few cities which do report crime. But there if you rape, you have to spend time in the hardest fashion all your life. I am not comparing two systems. Having said that, if some country is doing the right thing, we should try follow them,“ he comments.
His frustration can be clearly seen when he quips, “In society where we regard children as avatars of God, given the level of social depravity, we are now even raping our Gods.”
An angry Amit, currently seen in Jeannie Aur Juju, even goes to the extent of asking for dastardly punishments for rapists as is prevalent in Saudi Arabia and other West Asian countries. “If a man rapes a four year old and is diagnosed as mentally fit, I think he deserves the worst kind of punishment. God save these criminals. If ever I come across them, I would harm them very badly.”
Before concluding, Amit also advocates that woman should be allowed to carry arms to protect themselves. “This is the need of the hour for the government is doing nothing to protect the women at large,” he informs.
