The character graph is always in the writers’ hands: Sonal Panvar

MUMBAI: Sonal Panvar, who is seen as Malaika in Sanjay and Binaiferr Kohli’s Happu ki Ultan Paltan, which is produced under their banner Edit II, believes that a character’s evolvement in a show depends on the writer. She said, “The character graph is always in the writers’ hands. They decide how the character evolves, and this keeps things fresh and relatable.”

“Even in comedy, surprises play a big role. For instance, in a recent episode, Malaika was shown in a very different light—wearing a masculine outfit, which turned out to be part of a dream. These kinds of surprises keep the audience entertained. I’ve also played various characters, like a British role in another episode, which added variety and fun to the storyline,” she added.

She further shared that she is hopeful that her show will be achieving more success this year. “Like every year, it’s a great achievement for any show to run successfully, and I believe the reason is that the foundation of our show is very strong.”

“The writing is excellent, and in a comedy show, the script is the most important aspect. A strong base makes everything work smoothly, and I feel that’s what’s happening with our show. I hope it continues to progress not just this year but in the years to come,” she added.

Sonal also confessed that working on a daily soap can be challenging, as it leaves an actor with very little personal time. However, she added that she tries to manage everything.

“Our work schedule is relatively smooth, so I do get time for myself. Whenever I wrap up early, I like going out, meeting friends, or just relaxing at home. Balancing work and personal life depends on how well you manage your time,” she said.

She also shared that in terms of personal time, she doesn’t feel that she is missing out. She said, “I’m not married and don’t have the kind of responsibilities that might affect my professional life. I’ve grown up this way, managing my own time, and I truly enjoy staying busy. I feel fortunate to be able to work from morning to night.”

Sonal aims to keep herself busy this year and wants to explore other platforms too. “I aim to explore web shows, films, and even theater. I enjoy being busy—it keeps me motivated and fulfilled. I want to work back-to-back and give my best.”

She also wants to upskill this year. “I’ve already been trained in Kathak and Bharatnatyam, but I’m thinking of picking up something new—maybe a painting workshop or something artistic. I believe that as an artist, learning never stops. Whether it’s acting or any other art form, I want to explore as much as I can. That’s what I’m looking forward to this year,” she ended.
