Well known film (1971) and TV producer (Jai Shri Krishna, Meera, and Shakuntala) Amrit Sagar (Moti Sagar Productions) who is currently busy with his new romantic comedy film Rabba Main Kya Karoon has mega small screen plans as well.
Talking about it, he told Tellychakkar.com, “I have few shows lined up and am just waiting for my above film to release. I will then dedicate a month to my TV division. We have some reality concepts in pipeline and are thinking of bringing back Season 2 of Rakhi Ka Insaaf which we had earlier produced under the banner of I AM Productions .”
He does not think that Season 1of the controversial Imagine TV show was too much for Indian sensibilities. “I think there is more rubbish on Indian TV than my above show which was based on the Jerry Springer show on US TV. Just tune into any news channel and you will understand what I am talking about,” he explained.
When asked whether other big ticket GECs (General Entertainment Channels) will be ready to accept such risky concepts as Rakhi Ka Insaaf (with Imagine being shut), he stated, “I think finally what matters is content. Today all channels are looking for that differentiator. For example, way back in the year 2000 when Star Plus came up with KBC (Kaun Banega Crorepati) nobody thought that chat shows would work, but the format did wonders and this game show changed the TV scenario. Here I will not take away anything from Mr. Amitabh Bachchan.”
Talking about his other on-air show Ramayan on Zee TV, Amrit whose grandfather Ramanand Sagar made the hugely popular original Ramayan series said, “Agreed the ratings on Zee TV are not much, but this mytho is rocking the charts on Doordarshan. I believe that Ramayan as a story is something that will always work. Every year we have Ram Katha for 10 days during Navratri and Dussehra, and people always flock to such gatherings.”
On the new trend of simulcasting, Amrit averred, “This arrangement which Zee has with the pubcaster is good, but you can’t have the same with every show. Here it works, as Ramayan will not be consumed by a south Mumbai audience but more by desi folks who go for Kumbh Mela.”
For the uninitiated, Amrit’s father Moti Sagar had made interesting non mytho shows such as Prithviraj Chauhan, Dharam Veer and Hotel Kingston etc as well.
