TV Soaps: Playing the election card

TV Soaps: Playing the election card
The saffron wave has engulfed India with BJP, under the able leadership of its Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, winning the election mandate of 2014 hands down. Since the last couple of months politics has been the ambit heavily dug and played on by varied forms of media. The Arnabs, the Rajdeeps and the Barkhas of the world have been talking (read: screaming) their hearts out to gain maximum public attention playing the card of ‘creating political awareness’. Today, the entire political humbug reached its stage of epiphany with the verdict coming out loud and clear. But it was not just the news channels which made maximum use of the opportunity, even daily soaps across platforms weaved political sub plots in their primary storyline. To start with, the two leads of the show Ranvi (Shivin Narang) and Baldev (Vishal Vashishtha) have been seen getting into a tough competition to emerge as the next Sarpanch in Star Plus’ Ek Veer Ki Ardaas…Veera (Beyond Dreams Entertainment). The show categorically presented the various procedures during elections, from nominations to productive campaigning. Also how opposition parties try to bribe and get supporters to their side was projected really well in the show. With the guys being brother-in-laws, how politics can ruin relationship and family bonding was also depicted. And now with Ranvi fighting for his life after being thrashed by Baldev’s associates, we will get to see how this election drama gets wrapped up in the show. Then came another hero Jagya (Shashank Vyas) who was seen taking the job of a politician quite seriously after having seen how his villagers have been misguided and exploited by the earlier leaders. The show Balika Vadhu (Sphere Origins) on Colors also gave an insight on how a political party comes into formation right from selecting a symbol. Also the importance of heavy campaigning and reaching out to the masses was presented along with how opposition parties can dig up graves to put one down. But the truth and the good finally won with Jagya winning the elections. Viewers will now get to see how he would carry forward his duty of being a politician. And finally a female politician will emerge on TV with Star Plus’ Ek Ghar Banaunga (Village Boy Productions) having opened their political track recently. Poonam played by the lovely Ishita Dutta has always been the righteous person and has decided to contest the elections against a dangerous man. The decision came in after she realised that her money minded local MLA has a criminal record and only wants to achieve power without considering his people’s need. The MLA played by Shabaz Khan will soon kidnap Poonam and threat her to not fight against him. But viewers, surely know that she will and by her beliefs will also emerge as the winner. This was the overall picture. So which track on elections did you enjoy the most? Hit the comment box below and share your views.
