Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7 May 1861. He was a Bengali who went on to become a legend by the beauty of what he inked and his contribution to the freedom struggle of India against the British. Rabindranath was a rare man of different merits. He was a novelist, dramatist, artiste, essayist, music composer, philosopher, academic, linguist and social reformer. The versatile personality throughout his life enriched Bangla literature through his writings. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for his English version of Gitanjali.
His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems, the Republic of India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla. The composer of Sri Lanka's national anthem, Sri Lanka Matha was a student of Tagore, and the song is inspired by Tagore's style.
Tagore campaigned for the Indian nationalist movement and was a close friend of Mahatma Gandhi.
Yesterday (7 August 2012) was the great man’s death anniversary.
Tellychakkar.com pays tribute to the man of letters talks to some TV stars on what they feel and think about him.
Bengali beauty Kamalika Guha Thakurta said, “Till date Tagore’s poems and music are so relevant. Tagore had songs for every occasion from bright to dark, happy to sad that we go through all the stages in life. He would only offer us joys of life. We find peace in our heart listening the bard's compositions. Tagore searched life in nature, in the smile of moonlight or in the dance of raindrops. The change of nature would constantly console him. One of the songs I like the most, and the lyrics are
Akash bhora shurjo tara
Bishwa bhora pran
Tahari majkhane ami peyechhi peyechhi mor sthan
Bishowye tai jage, jage amar gaan
Which means the sky is filled with stars and the sun, this earth with life vibrant. Among it all I too have received a home out of this wonder my song is born.
The words are full of life. The world moves on. Birds continue chirping; the gentle breeze flows as before. And thus, we have to move on too. There are many legend writers but Tagore will be missed by everyone.
So from television if any show is made on Tagore’s life who do you think can portray his role? “I have no idea who can portray his role. Actor can get into the shoes of anybody. But he should understand the depth and knowledge about him.” Kamalika ended.
Handsome lad Romit Raj, who is seen in Adaalat as Varun said, “Everybody knows him and his versatile personality. The words which are used in his poems during that time were so defined and meaningful. The English he used was so modern that still it is relevant to us. The national anthem ‘Jana gana mana’ which we sing everyday is written by him. Rabindranathji knew many languages. In all his composition he had significance and emotions. There many songs which I like but one song that is very close to my heart is “Jodi Tor Dak Shune Keu Na Ase Tobe Ekla Cholo Re.. Tobe Ekla Cholo, Ekla Cholo, Ekla Cholo, Ekla Cholo Re.”
If given a chance would you like to portray his role? “Yes, definitely I would love to play his teenage life role.”
Actress Indrani Haldar shared, “I know Rabindranath Tagore from my early school days. He is a legend. Rabindranath was a rare man of multifarious qualities. He is the writer with whom you can relate your every emotion. In translation his poetry was viewed as spiritual. Rabindranath’s presence can be felt in our culture and everywhere else. He has achieved global fame as a poet, novelist, dramatist, composer and an artist. India’s Jana Gana Mana is written by him. He is most remembered for Gitanjali which still remains the favorite of many.
Rabindranath Tagore has written countless poems and songs. But my all time favorite is a song which is “je ratey mor duar guli bhanglo jhorey”. It’s a sad song but very meaningful.”
From television if any show is made on Tagore’s life who do you think can portray his role? I don’t think so anybody can portray Tagore’s role from the television industry.”
We got in touch with Reshmi Ghosh, she said, “I am a Bengali and we have born listening to Tagore songs. His songs and poems are so meaningful. In my childhood I played Tagore’s role. He was a romantic and extrovert kind of a person. I am extremely fond of his writing. I have never been to Santiniketan (the place where he founded Vishwa Bharati University) but I will surely go there. My all time favourite song of Tagore will be “Jodi Tor Dak Shune Keu Na Ase Tobe Ekla Cholo Re. I feel proud that every non Bengali knows this song.”
Akanksha Singh said, “When I was in Jaipur I did my first theater, it was called as “Subha” and was written by Rabindranath Tagore. I played a deaf and dumb girl’s role. So that character is very near to my heart. The national anthem Jana Gana Mana is written by him. I don’t think any other author could have written so brilliantly like him. I haven’t read his poems but I like all his stories.”
Finally Debina Benerjee stated, “I have born listening to his songs. I have also been to his house. My favorite song of his whose English lyrics is, “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high, where knowledge is free.” The originality of thought that this poem has is unparalleled. It’s so naturally reflects human desire to have a world like that. It’s the word of freedom and inspiration. We are so lucky that a poet like him is born in our land.
So tell us from the television industry which actor will play the role of Rabindranath aptly?
“I think Ronit Roy and Gurmeet Choudhary can fit into his role.”
We all salute the great man, Rabindranath Tagore!!!
